WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?

Greetings and welcome to one and all. The Lord is good to all. I will be continuing today in the Bible Book of James. I see this as a very straight forward and instructive Book in the ways of Heaven. Of course, one still cannot just read it, it must be studied with ears to hear and eyes to see. Reading Scripture is good and right but it is important that we dig beneath the surface to walk with Him in His plan for us and in all that we are heir to in Him. Now let’s go to our primary text for today.
James 5:14-16 (KJV)
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
We will pick up in verse fifteen today. The fourteenth and fifteenth verses are connected by the conjunctive “and” putting this together as part of the same idea. Here we find the phrase “prayer of faith”. This is the only place in Scripture this phrase is used. Then we are told the prayer of faith will save the sick. Let’s take a look at the word “save” then back to the phrase “prayer of faith”. It is the same word that is commonly used for salvation. The Greek is transliterated to English as sōzō meaning to be safe, to save, deliver, protect, heal, preserve, to do well, and be made whole according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. it seems to me in context that the verse is not talking about salvation but healing of a sickness, deliverance, being made whole.
Now back to the phrase “prayer of faith”. The obvious would be that the elders must pray in faith and the sick one must receive in faith. Faith in what? Well, God of course but a promise of God.
1 Peter 2:24 (KJV)
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
It is vital that both parties be fully persuaded of the Word of God.
Romans 4:20-21 (KJV)
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
Did you notice the phrase “fully persuaded”? This means that the only possible outcome of the prayer of faith is the person’s healing. It is not a “let’s see what happens”. They must believe the following just as Jesus believed and confessed.
John 14:10 (KJV)
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Do you, do I, believe this? It is vital if we are to do the works Jesus did and the greater works (John 14:12). This passage in James does not say that the sick person is raised up immediately. If we have an instant manifestation that’s wonderful but what if we don’t? Do we cling to the promise and give thanks to God or throw our hands in the air declaring “well I guess that didn’t work”. Let’s consider the following admonition.
2 Corinthians 4:18 (KJV)
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
The sickness is the seen thing, the physical thing, the unseen thing is the Scripture promise and the manifestation from the spiritual realm to the physical. So, we look not at the sickness which seems to remain but continue to look at the promise with thanksgiving fully persuaded. Knowing the promise has to manifest it is the Word of God and He is faithful, He cannot lie. In conclusion today, our primary text goes on to say “the Lord shall raise him up” not might but shall. This looks just like what Jesus said in John 14:10 “the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works”.
TAKE HOME:
- The prayer of faith means that we are fully persuaded of the Word of God, and it is the only possible outcome.
- It is the prayer of faith that saves the sick and the Lord raises them up in response to the prayer of faith.
- Be careful to look at the eternal and not the temporal.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
