CALL, BE ANOINTED, BE HEALED IN JESUS NAME

Greetings and welcome to one and all. The Lord is good to all. I will be continuing today in the Bible Book of James. I see this as a very straight forward and instructive Book in the ways of Heaven. Of course, one still cannot just read it, it must be studied with ears to hear and eyes to see. Reading Scripture is good and right but it is important that we dig beneath the surface to walk with Him in His plan for us and in all that we are heir to in Him. Now let’s go to our primary text for today.
James 5:14-16 (KJV)
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Last week we were focused on verse fourteen of our primary text and I will pick up there today. I pointed out that the text tells us that the person who is sick is to call for the elders. The elders would be those more mature Christians in the sick persons Church, group or support system. It is important that the person in need of prayer initiate the call for help. The other way around is not likely to be fruitful, that is elders calling the distressed person to see if they can come and pray for them. This is akin to giving unsolicited advice, it is likely to go unheeded. Also notice that more than one elder is to go when called upon. Remember Jesus sent His disciples out two by two.
Mark 6:7 (KJV)
7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;
It seems to me this is a security issue as well as a safety issue with regards to males going to a female or vice versa.
Mark 6:12-13 (KJV)
12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.
13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.
Did you notice that they preached then came the casting out of demons and healing the sick having anointed them with oil. How does faith come?
Romans 10:17 (KJV)
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God, the uttered Word of God. It is implied that one is listening (their own voice or others) to understand and implement. How is faith released? By speaking and doing.
Mark 11:22-23 (KJV)
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
The oil has no power but is symbolic and reminds the person of the presence of the Holy Spirit. In addition, remember the following verse.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 (KJV)
12 And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
Finally verse fourteen reminds us that we do all in the name of the Lord, that is Lord Jesus.
Colossians 3:17 (KJV)
17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
TAKE HOME:
- It is important that the one who is sick calls for the elders. More than one elder is to go.
- The elders are to anoint the sick one with oil which is symbolic of the Holy Spirit, the One doing the work.
- We do all in the name of Jesus.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
