HANDED OVER TO THE TORMENTORS

Welcome dear saints of God and others to this ongoing study of forgiveness. Our forgiveness and our forgiving others is huge in the ways of God. The Word makes it clear time and again that if we do not forgive others their trespasses against us, God will not forgive us. It does not take a high IQ to see that this is vital to our walk with, our fellowship with God. Unforgiveness is sin (iniquity) and sin separates us from God. We may not be separated in relationship, still a son, but separated in fellowship and pleasing the Father.
Isaiah 59:1-3 (ESV)
1 Behold, the LORD’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear;
2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies; your tongue mutters wickedness.
This is not a good place to be, so let’s be quick to repent of all iniquity including unforgiveness. Now I will dive into a lengthy passage of Scripture that is quite sobering if we don’t just skate over it.
Matthew 18:23-27 (ESV)
23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.
24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.
25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’
27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
Here we find a man that owed much more than we could pay. This is a picture of you and me; we owed a debt that we had no way to pay. But Jesus steps up pays the debt, and the Father cancels our debt. As you probably know the account does not end here, let’s continue.
Matthew 18:28-31 (ESV)
28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’
29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’
30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.
31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.
This servant who was forgiven much more than he could ever hope to repay refuses to forgive a fellow servant by putting them in prison. Again, this is not the end of the story but we, I hope, can see a giant issue with the servant forgiven much.
Matthew 18:32-35 (ESV)
32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.
33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’
34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.
35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
The word “jailers” in verse thirty-four in the King James is tormentors. I don’t know about you, but this does not sound good at all to me. Seems like forgiveness is a small price to pay for our Heavenly Father to forgive us and keep the jailer, the tormentors away. The tormentors are the demons, the curse, the stealing, killing, and destroying that is loosed by our sin.
The Scripture is not clear here concerning the breaking of the hedge and the curse compassing the person in this life or them being cast into Hell (their choice). The thing that we might want to ask is this. Is it possible for that man or us to pay the debt of sin? The answer is no. This man was turned over to the tormentors until he could pay the debt, but that would be never. Are we on our way to Hell refusing to forgive?
TAKE HOME:
- Our unrepented iniquities separate us from God. God is still able to save, His arm is not shortened, but we choose.
- Great mercy, compassion, and forgiveness has been afforded us, let us do likewise with our fellow man.
- Does refusing to forgive another change our destination to Hell? Read the Matthew 18 account very thoughtfully.
Lord willing, I will resume right here Monday, tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
