CAST DOWN EMOTIONAL RESPONSES TO OFFENSE

Welcome dear saints of God and others to this ongoing study of forgiveness. Our forgiveness and our forgiving others is huge in the ways of God. The Word makes it clear time and again that if we do not forgive others their trespasses against us, God will not forgive us. It does not take a high IQ to see that this is vital to our walk with, our fellowship with God. I will now move forward in our study of the need for us to forgive in order for the Father to forgive us.
Mark 11:22-26 (KJV)
22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
This is a lengthy passage but brings into focus the full importance of our forgiving other whether they ask forgiveness or not. First, you faith will not work if you are harboring unforgiveness. Remember faith works by love (agape) and refusing to forgive is contrary to love. Next Jesus tells us about how to exercise our faith in God and our authority in the earth. Then all in the same breath Jesus starts talking about forgiveness. If we will not forgive, truly forgive (the Father knows the difference) our Heavenly Father will not forgive us. As I discussed in an earlier teaching, this is sin, and sin opens the door to the thief, the curse. If you enjoy stealing, killing, and destroying in your life hold onto unforgiveness but if you like the abundance Jesus came to give forgive. I will now bring forward a couple of Scriptures that will help us to forgive as God forgives.
Philippians 3:12-14 (ESV)
12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
In verse thirteen the word “forgetting” does not mean the thing is absent from our memory, but we are neglecting it. We neglect (don’t give attention to, disregard) the thing which is behind. The thing which is behind in the context of this teaching is the thing we have forgiven. This would include even things we have done and forgiven ourselves of. Our focus is not on the past, be it good or bad but on what lies ahead.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (ESV)
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh.
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
Our own memories, fleshly tendencies as we are putting our flesh to death will try to rise up, evil spirits will remind us, and even people around us saint and sinner alike. We filter every thought (stronghold) through our knowledge of Scripture, take it captive, and follow Scripture not the thought. The Holy Spirit enables us in all of this, but we must choose.
TAKE HOME:
- Our faith will not work if we walk in unforgiveness. Faith works or is powered by love and failure to forgive is a breach of love (sin).
- We are to neglect memories of past offenses from others and ourselves which are forgiven.
- Powered of the Holy Spirit we are to take all thoughts captive that are contrary to the Word, the will of God and cast them down.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
