EXERCISE SELF-CONTROL

Greetings dear saints of God and others and welcome to our ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. Now to our text for today.
James 1:5-7 (KJV)
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
As we examine our familiar text, we see that faith is involved in asking, asking without wavering. This of course is no different than anything else we come to God about or declare in our lives. Asking is not begging! We are told to come boldly to the Throne of Grace. Not arrogantly but boldly in full confidence that God will give us the answers we seek. Jesus understands, He had to do the same thing in His earthly Ministry.
Hebrews 4:15-16 (KJV)
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Remember that true faith is being fully persuaded, it is knowing that the answer is the only possibility, the only outcome. The minute you entertain other options in your thoughts and words you are wavering and you will not receive of the Lord. All thoughts and words of unbelieve, contrary to the promise must immediately be repented of and the Blood of Jesus applied followed by a declaration of the promise with thanksgiving. You do this no matter what your eyes, your body, or any other natural thing tells you.
Sometimes it is useful to see a pair of balance scales like lady justice has. On one side is unbelief, on the other side is faith. Which side is heavier? If you’re hoping the promise comes with worldly hope which is fraught with disappointment it will not come. The devils may offer up a cheap substitute, hold on with faith for the abundance of Heaven.
James 1:6-8 (KJV)
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
I want you to notice in verse seven that we are not told the one who wavers won’t receive anything. We are told he/she will not receive anything from the Lord. This one will receive the worlds result or a cheap imitation from evil forces. Yes, not wavering is work and takes a disciplined mind. We must not waver if we want to walk with God and get His promises, Heaven upon the earth. Wavering in one area brings instability to our whole life. This is very serious. A disciplined mind is a fruit of our spirit and like all else must be exercised to be ever increasing.
Galatians 5:22-23 (KJV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
The word “temperance” in verse twenty-three means self-control. We stay focused on the Word of God, the promise of God and that is what we meditate and speak. That is not to say we deny, ignore, or don’t address what is apparent in the natural, it means we keep our focus on the answer (Word of God) not the problem.
TAKE HOME:
- Wavering will never bring the promise of God into our lives only the worlds or devils cheap imitations.
- We must focus on the promise of God, the Word of God casting down all thoughts and words contrary to the Word of God. Do not waver!
- If you are wavering in one area concerning the Word you will be unstable in all your ways (verse eight).
Lord willing, I will resume right here Monday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
