POSSESSOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH

Greetings and welcome back to our study of the Bible character Melchizedek who first appears in Genesis chapter fourteen. As we have seen there is much to glean from this account of Abram’s rescue of Lot, the appearance of Melchizedek, and the King of Sodom. Some prominent themes we have seen to date includes the importance of types and shadows, our Jubilee, Calvary, and now the idea of being joint-heirs or co-heirs with God. Let’s go to our primary text for today.
Genesis 14:18-24 (KJV)
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
23 That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
Today we are focusing on the idea, the spiritual reality of being a joint-heir or co-heir with God and each other. An heir is a beneficiary, a recipient of something from another. Generally, this is parents to children but can be between any two people or entities. The one giving the inheritance must die for the inheritor to receive whatever is being inherited or ownership transferred.
Hebrews 9:15-17 (KJV)
15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
I have heard it said that Jesus is the only one to die then be resurrected from the dead to mediate or be executor of their own will. In the natural world when a person dies and say they have five heirs the assets of the estate are divided among the five. Being a joint-heir or co-heir with Christ is quite different. This estate has no boundaries or limits. We inherit all that Jesus inherited which is everything. If one inherits all spiritual things of the Kingdom of God, then all natural things are ours to possess as well. Remember, all physical manifestations have their root or origin in the spiritual realm. God the Father has given all things to the Son.
Hebrews 1:2 (KJV)
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
The Apostle Paul then confirms what we already know from our text in Genesis, that we are joint heirs with Christ, with God.
Romans 8:16-17 (KJV)
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
The moment we made Jesus our Lord and were joined with Him, Jesus in us, us in Him, Jesus in the Father (John 17:21-23), and we were indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:17) all that Jesus possessed we possessed. If God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit lack nothing then we lack nothing. Think about that!
Now in conclusion this was taught to us in verses nineteen and twenty-two of our primary text. In verse nineteen Melchizedek declares that Abram is possessor of heaven and earth. Then in verse twenty-two Abram declares that God is possessor of heaven and earth. Well, which one is it? It is both, they are joint heirs. In reality God has given the earth unto men (Psalm 115:16) so the joint ownership is mostly with heaven, those things of the spiritual realm. We believers invite, authorize God to use through us all that we occupy, possess in the earth.
TAKE HOME:
- Like our father Abraham we also are possessors of heaven and earth with our Father God.
- Jesus is heir of all and in Him we are heir of all.
- All that belongs to Jesus belongs to each one of us.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Saturday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
