THE SOURCE OF ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS

Greetings to one and all and welcome back to our exploration of the Bible character named Melchizedek. I believe that the last three teachings concerning him have established that he was a real historical figure and not a preincarnate Jesus. Melchizedek is indeed a type and shadow of Jesus as our study will clearly show. This very brief account in Genesis including him illuminates several foundational Truths for that time and ours. Now, let’s move to our text for today.
Genesis 14:17-18 (KJV)
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Last teaching I mentioned how Melchizedek was both king and priest which foreshadowed the Messiah who is king and priest as well. Not only that but all who belong to Christ are kings and priests also in His image and likeness. This man was also king of Salem meaning king of peace. Our Lord Jesus is the prince of peace.
Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Because of Jesus we have peace and all that means. Now we see that Melchizedek, king of right and justice, righteousness brought forth bread and wine (we will get to that). Jesus is also King of righteousness
Hebrews 1:8 (KJV)
8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Notice the scepter? This symbol indicates the source of something, in this case righteousness, our righteousness.
Romans 5:17 (KJV)
17 For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
Jesus is righteous and imparts of His righteousness to each one that names Him as Lord. One cannot give away what they do not have. Jesus was found innocent of all sin but bore the penalty of sin for the sake of each of us. Jesus was our scapegoat. Jesus was vindicated in Hell of all sin by the Words of His mouth and the shedding of His innocent Blood that cried out for justice. Soak in this wonderful words written by the Apostle Peter by the unction of the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 2:23-24 (KJV)
23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Back to our Genesis text, what is this about Melchizedek bringing out bread and wine? Was it a snack for hungry soldiers or something else? We immediately recognize this as the Communion Table, but it is another 400 years before the Exodus from Egypt and 2000 years before Christ will hang on the Cross. We know today that the bread represents the body of Christ and the wine the Blood of Christ Jesus. What about then? The text does not say but this bread was likely unleavened. Leaven is symbolic of sin. The Show Bread in the Holy Place of the Tabernacle was unleavened and the bread they had in Egypt at the Passover was unleavened. Jesus is the bread of life, our unleavened, sinless, sacrifice for sin. These things were learned in the Garden of Eden as a shadow of better things to come, just as Cain and Able learned about First Fruits Offerings, and Abraham knew to tithe. More about the Communion Table next teaching.
TAKE HOME:
- Melchizedek was king and priest, king of righteousness, king of Salem (peace) and so is our Lord and Savior.
- Melchizedek was King of Salem, meaning peace, and our Savior is “The Prince of Peace”.
- We are made righteous with the righteousness of Jesus.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Saturday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
