Greetings and welcome back to our study of the Bible character of Melchizedek. Today is the traditional day that the Christian Church celebrates the Resurrection of Christ. This year I used the Hebrew calendar, and the 17th of Nisan was yesterday and we celebrated yesterday. Let’s go to our primary Bible text.
Genesis 14:16-18 (KJV)
16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Before we move back to the Communion Table, I want us to take a look at verse sixteen (sixteen is the number of love) of the primary Bible text. Remember Genesis is first Book of the Bible, and one is unity with God, joined with God. Fourteen (verse) is deliverance and salvation. So, by the will of God, the love of God we have deliverance, salvation. Isn’t this just such a wonderful Book? You will remember that an enemy had taken the people and their stuff captive for their own purposes. Sound familiar? Abram is a type and shadow of the Christ to come, a prophetic picture of jubilee. Christ is our jubilee. Read this Leviticus text carefully, this is not just some Old Testament ritual but an eternal reality for them, for us.
Leviticus 25:9-10 (KJV)
9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.
10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
The tenth day of the seventh month is the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. Oh, there is so much here! Jesus not only Atoned (covered) our sin but blotted it out, the legal writs of the evil one no longer exits. When we make Jesus Lord and Savior, He is responsible (number 10) to make us sons of God giving us His spiritual perfection (number 7). Jubilee was in the fiftieth year, 50 is the number of the Holy Spirit, we are saved by Grace, a function of the Holy Spirit. Oh, what a Book, what a Savior! Do you think that the Jubilee sounds a lot like what Jesus read at the beginning of His earthly Ministry?
Luke 4:18-19 (KJV)
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
Jesus is our Jubilee! Now, let’s get back to our primary text, verse eighteen, the bread, the wine, the Communion Table. I talked last Melchizedek teaching about the bread and the wine and how this knowledge was known to Melchizedek. This is some 400 plus years before the exodus from Egypt and some 2000 years before the Cross. As we wind down for today let’s look at the blood and the bread in the Exodus. First the blood.
Exodus 12:6-7 (KJV)
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
The side posts in the Hebrew are called mezûzâ according to
Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary which comes from a root meaning gate. The blood, especially the Blood of Jesus provided a gateway or door out of bondage into freedom. They also put blood on the upper post over the door, which was prophetic of the coming Messiah and the eternal Blood. Next, the bread.
Exodus 12:18 (KJV)
18 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.
Leaven is symbolic of sin, Jesus is our unleavened bread, the bread of life. They, the Israelites leaving Egypt, were to eat unleavened bread from Passover (14th) until the twentieth. Jesus is our unleavened bread and in Christ Jesus we also are unleavened bread.
1 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)
7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
Don’t let the devil, other people, your memories, or your emotions tell you otherwise!
TAKE HOME:
- Jesus is our Jubilee, foretold in the account of Abram, a type and shadow of the Law and the Savior illuminated by both.
- We are returned to the Kingdom of God out of darkness, back to the family of God, free indeed.
- Christ our Passover Lamb, the Bread of Life, has cleansed us and we in Him are unleavened as well.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Saturday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
