TWO PEOPLE HAVE COME TO YOU

Greetings dear ones and welcome to our study of the Bible character Melchizedek (spelled Melchisedec in the New Testament). In review, some ask and others assert that Melchizedek was the preincarnate Christ. Others put forward the idea that this man was actually Shem, one of the sons of Noah. Various timelines do appear to have overlap but only in the early years of Abram’s life. Flavius Josephus a first century Jewish historian writes about this person as well (Antiquities of the Jews [Book 1, 180-181]). He sees Melchizedek as a human historical figure. Still others maintain that this character is a type and shadow of Christ. There is a brief but very meaningful and revealing mention of Melchizedek in the Book of Genesis. Much is said about Melchizedek comparing him to Jesus in the 5th, 6th, and 7th chapters of the Bible Book of Hebrews.
Yesterday we reviewed a lengthy passage of Scripture from the fourteenth chapter of Genesis in our quest of having a better understanding of who this man, Melchizedek is or was. First, I want us to look at another encounter which occurs just before Sodom and Gomorrah are destroyed.
Genesis 18:1-2 (KJV)
1 And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
2 And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
Notice here it says directly that “the LORD appeared” to Abraham. There is no ambiguity, this is indeed a preincarnate appearance of Jesus upon the earth. The word translated as “LORD” is yhwh meaning the self-existent eternal One according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Now, back to Melchizedek.
Genesis 14:17-18 (KJV)
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Throughout our lives there are always two people who come to us, one from Satan, the other from God and they do not introduce themselves as such. We must discern between them.
1 Corinthians 12:10 (KJV)
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1 John 4:1 (KJV)
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Back to our text. The King of Sodom represents Satan. We see later that he wants the people and Abraham can keep the stuff. If Satan can’t kill you, he wants you to worship him. Just as God brings things into obedient believers lives so also can Satan bring things into the lives of those obedient to him. Let’s review what Satan said to Jesus and Jesus did not refute it in His temptation in the wilderness.
Luke 4:5-6 (KJV)
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
TAKE HOME:
- Who is the King of Sodom in your life?
- Who is the Melchizedek in your life?
- Do you routinely try, distinguish between, the spirits of those in your life?
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Saturday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
