TAME YOUR TONGUE – TAME YOUR THOUGHT LIFE

Greetings precious saints of God and others and welcome to our study of the Bible Book of James. A very practical, informative, and corrective Book. It is corrective if we come with ears to hear and eyes to see. I must warn you that pretty much the whole third chapter of James has to do with our mouths and the great good or evil it produces. Concerning correction or chastening listen to the Holy Spirit through the writer of the Bible Book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 12:11 (KJV)
11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
I want the fruit of righteousness, what about you? Now lets go to our primary text for today.
James 3:5-8 (ESV)
5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind,
8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
We now come to an interesting couple of verses, verses seven and eight. The word “tamed” in our text means to subdue. One way to view verse seven is that other people cannot tame our tongues, what we say. Perhaps we control ourselves in their presence, but the thoughts remain and we say what we want elsewhere. That is not subduing the tongue. Before salvation and unfortunately after salvation our tongues remain “a restless evil, full of deadly poison”. Another person cannot tame or subdue our tongues for us and God won’t it is our choice. How do we go about subduing our tongues? It starts with renewing our minds, displacing the ways of the world and adopting the ways of Heaven.
Romans 12:2 (ESV)
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Luke 6:43-46 (KJV)
43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Is the fruit of your life corrupt or good? Whichever it is, is a direct result of the words of our mouths. I didn’t say so originally, God said it. Give verse forty-five great consideration. A Christian and be good or evil or vacillate back and forth. Do you have good treasure, which is a Godly thought life, or do you have evil treasure which is a devilish thought life. We choose. Our thought life is 100% under our control, not other people, not demons, and not God. Jesus is pretty clear here that the evil in our lives manifest from our thought lives through words of our mouth. Likewise, the good (Heaven’s definition) in our lives sprang from our thought life through the words of our mouth. Which are you choosing?
TAKE HOME:
- Only one person can tame (subdue) our tongue and that is we ourselves with the help of the Holy Spirit.
- Subduing the tongue starts with displacing the evil thoughts of the world with the holy thoughts of God.
- What is in our hearts will come out our mouths and determines our health and the direction of our lives.
