I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE
Monday – January 7, 2019, Sh’vat 1, 5779
Greeting precious brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, we are a most favored and precious people in the eyes of the Father. Welcome back to this Bible Study from the Book of John. I just marvel at how good our God is to each and every one of us who will value Him, His Word, and not only believe that He is but that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek after Him. Jesus is the key to salvation, to eternal life, there is but one key and His name is Jesus the Christ. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text from the Book of John.
John 6:34-40 (KJV)
34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
As we review our text, we find Jesus telling those gathered that He is the bread of life and that this bread will not leave them hungry in a short while and He adds that those who believe on Him will also never thirst. Sounds like the encounter with the Samaritan woman don’t you think?
John 4:13-14 (KJV)
13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
I am sure we all realize that the use of bread and water is to impart a picture for the listener or reader that is easy to understand and see in spiritual terms. A life changing verse for me in my Christian journey was and is the following.
Romans 1:20 (KJV)
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
In a nutshell the Apostle Paul is telling the Christians at Rome and us that if we have insight into the natural things, we have no excuse for not understanding the supernatural. Back to the Samaritan woman and the water Jesus talks to her about. I think you have noticed that Jesus uses the natural things at hand to launch into spiritual discussions. He had just fed the 5000 on the other side of the Galilee (bread and fish) and with the Samaritan woman she was there to get water. Water in Scripture is commonly representative of the Word of God unless it is specifically or explicitly referring to physical water. Jesus tells the Samaritan woman and us that if we will partake of this water (Word of God) making it part of us just as natural water becomes part of us when consumed not only will we not thirst but this Word (water) will be a continuous fountain of eternal life. Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that this water He is offering will become a well of water springing up within her (and us).
Does this well spring up automatically? And does this well bring eternal life only to us or to others also? As I bring todays study to an end let us look at an interesting aspect of these verses above about the water and the spring. As we look at the number and gender of the words in these verses, we find that references to water are neuter and singular. “Well” and “eternal life” on the other hand are feminine and singular. As I have discussed many times before the feminine gender gives us the idea of increase or productivity. It would seem that this is akin to the difference between logos and rhema. Both are the Word of God but rhema is the Word spoken by a living or Anointed voice, the Word acted upon. So, it would seem that we can intake the logos Word but when we act upon it and speak it under or with the Anointing it becomes a rhema Word and this is what transforms us and others. This is the spring of living water bringing eternal life to ourselves and to others, it is productive. Let us not just listen to the Word of God, the logos, but determine to apply faith in love led of Holy Spirit (Anointing, living voice) and make things happen that are supernatural in our own life and the world around us for the glory of God.
