THE SERVANT OF SIN
Friday – March 29, 2019, Adar B 22, 5779

John 8:32-38 (KJV)
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
Just so we don’t miss it I want to point out, bring our focus to the fact that being made free does not just drop on us because we went to an alter or said a prayer of repentance. While it is true that we may have changed fathers and destinations we may well remain in the clutches of the curse. We must continue (abide, dwell) in the Word of God, and know the Word of God, the Truth. This knowing of the Word is more than a passing informational situation but the developing of intimacy with the Word, or one might say information plus understanding such that effective action can be and is taken. So, the Word, the Truth received and believed (faith), acted upon in love (agape), led of the Holy will make one free of whatever that particular Truth is speaking too, like finances, health, marriage, and so on.
As we look at the response of the Jews to Jesus in verse thirty-four, we see what I believe is a faith statement rather than a denial or idiotic statement. These people have been conquered by the Greeks, and now the Romans for a long time, and before that the Babylonians and Assyrians. Before I go to Jesus’ response let me show you what I mean by a faith statement. The leaders of Israel when the seat of government was in Tel Aviv would sign documents, pictures, etc. as in Jerusalem or next year in Jerusalem even though they were in Tel Aviv. Let’s look at the following Psalm first in the KJV and then in Young’s Literal Translation.
Psalm 122:1-3 (KJV)
1 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.
2 Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:

2 Our feet have been standing in thy gates, O Jerusalem!
3 Jerusalem–the builded one–Is as a city that is joined to itself together.
This particular song is a song of ascent that was sung when people went up to Jerusalem for the various feasts or other occasions. Even though they were not in Jerusalem they declared that they were by faith, they were acting upon it and soon they were in Jerusalem. We are to do the same thing with the Scripture, declare it in faith, in love, led of the Holy Spirit and it shall come to pass. One other thing you may find of interest before I move on is the third verse; “Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together”. The word ‘Jerusalem’ here is in the pleural not singular as it appears and is referring to natural Jerusalem and spiritual Jerusalem or Jerusalem above. One day these two will merge as one. You can imagine for example “Jacob’s Ladder” stretching from the future site of earthly Jerusalem on Mt. Moriah to Heavenly Jerusalem. Well, it looks like our time and space is about up. Lord willing, when we resume on Monday with this study we will pick up with Jesus’ response. As usual He is talking about spiritual things and they the carnal. The spiritual always dominates the physical, all physical things have their origins in the spiritual. Our personal world is the result of our thoughts, and words. Whatever your circumstances or mine we have created them over time with our thoughts and words. Does your world, does my world look like the Word of God or the curse?
