THE SERVANT OF SIN
Monday – April 1, 2019, Adar B 25, 5779

Greetings partners and friends of this ministry and The Three Minute Word publication. The featured pictures this week will be from my childhood here in Maine. This is a more recent picture but the building is of my first school house with pot bellied stove for heat and outhouse in the back for bathrooms. I once got the bright idea of marking around the outside with crayons and for the next several recesses I got to scrub those markings off. I got off easy, the alternative was for the teacher and I to go into the cloak (coat) room in the front of the building and experience the strap she kept for such occasions. As we prepare to plunge into our Bible Study, if you are reading this on Facebook please take a moment and hit the “like” and “share” buttons to extend the reach of this ministry. Let’s start by reviewing our primary Bible text and then move into our study.
John 8:32-36 (KJV)
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
Right from the very beginning of the ministry of Jesus the religious ruling class hated Jesus and sought to kill Him. It really is not different today. Jesus had the big house at Capernaum, His staff had nice houses, He had a large entourage, the people flocked to Him, people were being healed, released from all sorts of bondages, and He was getting the big offerings. We hear the same things today about large ministries with regard to their money, their homes, their airplanes, and so on. The religious ruling class and some people now and then were envious and wanted to kill Jesus. Today they murder with gossip, impugn their integrity, and character assassination.
In the last few verses Jesus has been talking about the Truth and how the Truth will make one free, not set one free. Last week I explained the very important distinction between being set free (have a record) and being made free (no record). As we have seen many times in this study and if you watch you will see it today in Church where one person is talking spiritual and the other is thinking carnal or natural. Jesus is talking about very important spiritual things and the gathered Jews are thinking and talking carnal. Jesus is talking spiritual freedom and they are talking natural freedom (discussed this last week). It is worthwhile going back and reviewing that information for we must make the same kind of faith statements I discussed last week if we want to participate in the promises of God. By the way God’s answer to a promise is never maybe or no, His answer is always yes and amen.
This brings us to verse thirty-four where Jesus tells them that “Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin”. Jesus is talking about any person, saint or sinner who sins, being the servant of sin. The word ‘servant’ carries with it the implication of being blind and a slave. The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament defines this word ‘servant’ as a slave, one who is in a permanent relation of servitude to another, his will being altogether consumed in the will of the other. The other in the case of sin is Satan (generally not him personally but the legions of demons he commands). As we will see later on Jesus refers to their father as Satan or the devil. A few years ago, I wrote a book titled “Temptation” and it is available on Amazon. Sin does not just spring up out of nowhere. The enemy or we ourselves due to various lusts will give consideration to something which is the foot in the door. Then, little by little, the door opens further and finally we are fully entered into the sin, blind (spiritually) and under the control of the evil ones. Light (Word of God) is the only cure, repentance the only way out. Jesus told His disciples on the day He was crucified to watch, pray, and not enter into temptation. I suppose this is still good advice?
Matthew 26:41 (KJV)
41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Too often we think we can play with the temptation like a cat with a mouse, the problem is that we are the mouse. The Serpent on the Day of Sin and Death brought the three major lusts to Eve and Adam. As we close for today meditate the following verses.
Genesis 3:6 (KJV)
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
1 John 2:16 (KJV)
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
James 1:14-17 (KJV)
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Until our next publication, as a Bible Teacher and Prophetic Voice I speak this blessing over each and every one of you, receive it by faith in Jesus name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (AMP)
24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
