YOUR MOUTH HAS PRODUCED YOUR LIFE

Greetings precious saints of God and others and welcome to our study of the Bible Book of James. A very practical, informative, and corrective Book. It is corrective if we come with ears to hear and eyes to see. I must warn you that pretty much the whole third chapter of James has to do with our mouths and the great good or evil it produces. Concerning correction or chastening listen to the Holy Spirit through the writer of the Bible Book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 12:11 (KJV)
11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
I want the fruit of righteousness, what about you? Now let’s go to our primary text for today.
James 3:9-12 (ESV)
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.
10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water?
12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.
We are still talking about the tongue, the words of our mouths. Have you had about all the chastisement you can take for one week? Change is hard until it becomes a part of our nature. A very important key, however, is to displace the old nature. We do that by casting down the thoughts of our old nature and not letting them out of our mouth. Instead, we speak the Word of God that counters those particular thoughts. One of the things that I remind myself of frequently is found in verse nine and that is that everyone of us saint and sinner alike are made in the likeness of God. As we examine ourselves do we find ourselves guilty of blessing God and cursing our fellowman one way or another. I am not necessarily talking about witchcraft but perhaps calling someone a no good so and so. Remember this verse?
Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)
29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Are you doing it, am I doing it, let’s judge ourselves. James goes on to point out that we are going to produce according to our kind. Are we of the God kind or the Devil kind? Do we say that God is our Father and Jesus is our Savior but act and talk like Satan is our father? What do you end up with when you mix good and evil? You end up with evil, with the curse. That’s exactly what Adam and Eve did and that didn’t work out well for them and neither will it for you and I.
TAKE HOME:
- Are speaking ill of saint and sinner alike not considering we are all made in the likeness of God.
- Are we putting out fresh water (the Word) and salt water (words of the world)? The mixture produces the results of the world; this is not the will of God.
- Examine the fruit of your life, it is not too late.
Lord willing, I will resume right here Monday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
