Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome to this ongoing study of “Father Abraham”. As I have said this will by no means be a definitive study of Abraham. I teach the Bible from the Bible. That is not to say that extra-Biblical sources cannot be useful and informative. However, we must never forget that these sources outside of Scripture are not Scripture. We will be reviewing Abraham’s life for it is encouraging for us all to see how God can and does flow in and through imperfect people to accomplish His will. Abrahams life was pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. I started this series of teachings showing the glorious end result then we went to the beginning to see the sausage be made. Now, let’s continue examining Abram then Abraham’s journey with the Lord to the fulfillment of the most important promise ever.
Abram and Lot will separate, with Lot and his company going to Sodom. In time, Sodom is overrun with Lot and the people of the city with their stuff are taken captive. Word comes to Abram and he goes to rescue Lot. Let’s pick up this engaging account right here.
Genesis 14:16-22 (KJV)
16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
The reason this is included is because the coming Messiah is all over this passage. I recently taught on this in a series about Melchizedek. I talked about how verse sixteen (number of love) was a picture of the Jubilee which is a type and shadow of what Jesus would do at Calvary, in Hell, and the Resurrection.
Leviticus 25:10 (KJV)
10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
I reminded you that the demons send people into our lives (represented by the King of Sodom) and God sends people into our lives (represented by Melchizedek). We must discern between them. Next in verse eighteen we see the communion table with bread and wine. The bread representing the body of Christ to broken for us and the wine representing the Blood to blot out sin. In the same verse we also see that Melchizedek (king of righteousness) is both king and priest foreshadowing the coming Messiah. We also saw the idea of being joint heirs with God in this passage. In Christ Jesus we are joint heirs or co-heirs with Him. Then we came to the Tithe which is the portion of our increase which belongs to God. Not tithing is robbing God. Look what happened in the Garden when Adam and Eve partook of what did not belong to them but God. Jesus is written all over this passage.
Tomorrow I will pick up this account from sin to the Messiah with the initiation of Blood Covenant between God and Abram.
TAKE HOME:
- Jesus is our Jubilee; He has restored all.
- Jesus is King and Priest, the sacrifice, inheritor of all and has included us in His inheritance.
- Tithing is a responsibility, a privilege with much benefit.
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
