Welcome dear children of God, brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus to Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries. Today we embark on a study of the Patriarch Abraham which Scripture describes as the father of us all. This will not be a definitive study of Abraham, and I will be using only Biblical sources for our learning. I have taught about Abram/Abraham many times because he is a pivotal figure in Scripture. There had to be an Abraham for there to be a Messiah. As we look at Abraham’s life and what was produced in the end it will give us all great hope. This man was imperfect. You probably know imperfect people including the one in the mirror. This man in the end flung the door wide open for God to bring the Messiah, in fact by Blood Covenant obligated God to bring the Messiah.
Now, let’s kick off our study of Abram/Abraham, the father of us all. This account of the life of Abram later named Abraham by God is pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. The name Abram means exalted father and Abrahm means father of a multitude. The change of name changed how Abraham saw himself and how he spoke of himself and this change of thinking and the words of his mouth changed everything. I will start in Romans a Bible Book written after the Cross where the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul tells us that Abraham “is the father of us all”.
Romans 4:16 (KJV)
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
As we embark on our study, we see the connection between faith and grace. There is no activity of Grace without faith. Faith is unequivocal trust, full confidence in, being fully persuaded of (Romans 4:21) the Word of God, the Person of God. Grace, a facet and a function of the Holy Spirit, is not active in the absence of our faith. Grace is an activity of God on our behalf. We are saved by Grace but first we must have faith in the Word, believe in our heart and declare it with our mouth (Romans 10:9, Ephesians 2:8).
What is the promise referred to in the Romans 4:16 text? It seems that the promise referenced is that every person may receive the Holy Spirit by faith in Jesus Christ. There are two aspects of receiving the Holy Spirit. First, it is the indwelling Holy Spirit who quickens our spirit man and translates us into the Kingdom of God. Holy Spirit, who is the grace of God, comes to live in us at the point we confess Jesus as Lord with our mouth and believe in our heart that God, the Father, raised Him from the dead. This is what is called being saved, being born again, or being born from above. We become one spirit with God.
1 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV)
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
This is not the baptism in the Holy Spirit which is a distinct and separate experience from salvation. Some would assert that one receives all of the Holy Spirit at salvation and there is no more to receive or experience. I don’t see this so much as receiving more of the Holy Spirit as stepping into a greater relationship with the Holy Spirit. We might think of it as a friendship with its various levels of intimacy from acquaintance to having free access to the home and all that is in the home. As a little rabbit trail, let’s examine the following passage from Galatians.
Galatians 3:13-14 (KJV)
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Here we see that Jesus went to the Cross to take the curse of the law (notice singular). The curse or law removed was the law of sin and death. That did not remove spiritual death, or the possibility of going from life to death but it did give a period of grace for repentance before spiritual death. Before in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sinned, they experienced spiritual death immediately. The other aspects of the curse are not removed from the present earth but we with our own thoughts and mouth have dominion over the curse in the name of Jesus. This work of the Cross is a work in progress. By this I mean that our bodies await redemption, glorification. We age and die but how we age, and die is up to us. We will be presented with opportunities to have the curse manifest in our lives, but we have dominion over those opportunities. In Galatians 3:14 we see that the Cross gave us, the Gentiles, the natural blessing of Abraham and now the spiritual blessing of salvation, a quickened spirit, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We are enabled to function as Jesus functioned in the earth and more (John 14:12).
TAKE HOME:
- The life of Abraham is pivotal to the coming of Christ and the legal process of bringing the restitution of all things.
- The promise of the Holy Spirit is sure for all the seed of Abraham which is Jew and Gentile alike in Christ Jesus.
- The natural blessing of Abraham has come upon us Gentiles through Christ Jesus, through the Cross, and we by faith receive the promise of the Holy Spirit.
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
