Greetings dear ones, we are honored to have you join this ongoing study of the 91st Psalm. It seems to me that many Christians have at least a passing acquaintance with this Psalm. Many invoked this Psalm during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It is generally understood as a Psalm of protection from all evil. If that is true, is it automatic with reading or quoting the Psalm? Well, let’s launch into our primary text.
Psalm 91:1-2 (KJV)
1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
I am hoping that you find this study fascinating, informative, and actionable. It should be clear that we are not automatically in the secret place of the Most High and the shadow of the Almighty because we are saved and cute. Thus far we have learned or further consolidated the following.
- Faith is necessary (Romans 10:17)
- Meditation of the Word the promise is needed (Joshua 1:8)
- We must focus on the promise (2 Corinthians 4:18)
- We must call it done before we see it (Romans 4:17-22)
- We must have knowledge (2 Peter 1:2-4)
- God has given us all things including His protection to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17)
Next, we will examine two words in verse one that are similar but different and those are “dwelleth” and “abide”. First dwelleth yāšab̠ is a verb meaning to sit, to dwell, to inhabit, to endure, to stay with apparently, to sit is the root idea according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament. Next, abide which is also a verb meaning to lodge, to tarry, to rest, to stay according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament. These are similar but different. Let’s see if we can tease out the difference by a paraphrase of Psalm 91:1.
Psalm 91:1 (KJV)
1 He/she that dwelleth [endures, stays with, sits] in the secret place of the most High shall abide [rest, stay] under the shadow of the Almighty. (Authors paraphrase, amplification)
Are you, am I enduring the antics the demons bring our way, are we staying with Scripture and not fear of circumstances, and are we calm knowing who we are, who He is, and that we are in Him If the issue can’t get to Him, it can’t get to us. When we do, we can “rest” in the Almighty, in His protection, His provision.
I will now move forward to talk about the “secret place”. The question might arise as to what exactly the secret place is and where the secret place is. Is it a physical space or a spiritual space? Let’s dive in.
Psalm 81:7 (KJV)
7 Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.
This a Psalm of Asaph and he records that he call out to God in a time of trouble and God answered him in the secret place. Was he in a specific location like a “prayer closet” or did he approach the Lord in honor and faith? Could this be a spiritually hedged (by God) in place? Note that he was heard at least in part because he endured, passed the test at the waters of Meribah. What about you and me? Consider the next two Ezekiel Scriptures.
Ezekiel 7:8 (KJV)
8 Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations.
Ezekiel 7:22 (KJV)
22 My face will I turn also from them, and they shall pollute my secret place: for the robbers shall enter into it, and defile it.
Did you see here disobedience pollutes the secret place? It opens the door wide open for the thief. All thoughts, words, and actions have a harvest. Notice in verse eight that he was judged of God and found guilty. The secret place is polluted and defiled and robbers enter into our disobedience. If we have unconfessed sin, sin we have not changed our mind about to coincide with God, don’t bother to pray until you have taken care of the sin.
What about the word “secret”? This word secret to transliterated from the Greek as sit̠rāh, a masculine noun meaning a covering, a hiding place, a secret according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament. So, the “secret place” is a spiritual condition we achieve in obedience to God where we are completely covered by God, beyond access by our spiritual enemies. Again, consider the list of conditions.
- We must be free of sin (Ezekial 7:8,22)
TAKE HOME:
- Attaining the secret place involves complete submission to God with faith at the top of the list.
- We are to be occupied with the promise and not problems.
- We are to study growing in knowledge, revelation, of the Father and the Son.
- We must be clean.
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
