FRIEND OF THE WORLD ENEMY OF GOD

Greetings dear saints of God and welcome to our Study of the Bible Book of James. As I have mentioned many times, I see this as a straightforward (for the most part) Bible Book with Wisdom for today. Much of the Book as to do with the Words of our mouth which springs from the thoughts of our minds as does everything else in our lives, in this creation. There is no way to exaggerate the importance of our thoughts and the words that spring from those thoughts, those beliefs. Now let’s go ahead and jump into our Bible text for today. Remember, I teach the Bible from the Bible.
James 4:1-4 (KJV)
1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
Now as we explore verse three of our text, we find that the word “lusts” here is back to the hedonism idea and not the coveting idea wanting what is our neighbors. We are looking to our own pleasure not loving God, loving our neighbor, nor fulfilling Blood Covenant. God is not against us having things that bring us pleasure. Consider the following to verses.
Psalm 37:3-5 (KJV)
3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4 Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Did you notice the qualifiers? Trusting the Lord, doing good by His standards, delighting in the Lord (His Word), and committing our ways to Him. If you are not seeing the desires of your heart coming into manifestation perhaps you don’t qualify. I didn’t say it the Lord did.
Proverbs 10:22 (NIV)
22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it.
The Blessing is the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in submission to God. I hope you’re not working on getting that word “wealth” to mean treasure in Heaven. It means wealth right here on the earth. I am not convinced there is any such thing as lots of treasure in Heaven without lots of treasure, what Jesus referred to as fruit, here on the earth. This brings us to verse four.
James 4:4 (KJV)
4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
I don’t know about you, but I do not want to be an enemy of God. Let’s ask ourselves where is our trust, our hope? If our trust and hope is in man, then we are operating under a curse. On the other hand, if our trust and hope is in God we are operating under the blessing. Which one do you think is best?
Jeremiah 17:5-8 (KJV)
5 Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
6 For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited.
7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
Have you departed from the Lord and put your trust and hope in man’s systems thus entering into adultery. Are you going to take the words of the Serpent like Adam and Eve or the Words of God.
John 15:7 (KJV)
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
TAKE HOME:
- Does your life revolve around bringing pleasure to yourself?
- Are we abiding in Jesus, His Words in us?
- Are we adulterers?
Lord willing, I will resume right here Monday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
