A WELL OF TRUTH
UNEQUALLY YOKED
Greetings precious children of Father God, brothers and sisters with Christ Jesus, with the Holy Spirit as Teacher, Helper, and the One who empowers. Welcome back to “A Well of Truth”. Today I will be dealing with the command not to be unequally yoked. First, please share this teachings as widely as possible using every tool at your disposal to do so. Thank you for sharing. You play a powerful and essential role in our efforts to bring the Truth to as many as possible. If we are commanded to not be unequally yoked than we are commanded to be equally yoked. We are to be yoked with those of the same kingdom. There are only two kingdoms in the earth, the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. The following passage is the passage that addresses this topic most directly and seriously.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (KJV)
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
As we delve into this let’s look at the definition of the word yoked. The word transliterated from Greek to English and translated as yoked is Heterozygeō meaning to yoke up differently, to associate discordantly, or to be unequally yoked together according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. I think we can see from the word itself, heterozygeo, it is the bringing together of two different things. For example, another place we see the use of the prefix ‘hetero’ is in heterosexual which means two of the opposite sex whereas homosexual means two of the same sex. From our primary passage we see the Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit is specifically talking about a saved person being yoked with an unsaved person. The fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth verses above go into detail of why this is forbidden.
What if we willingly and purposefully enter into a yoked relationship knowing we are commanded not too? Let’s look at the last two verses of our primary passage.
2 Corinthians 6:17-18 (KJV)
17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
We are commanded to come out from among the heathen and be separate. This does not mean we are to have nothing to do with the heathen (unbeliever) but it does mean we are to be a light unto them but not partake of their deeds. There deeds are not just actions but words (especially words). Don’t enter into their conversations that are contrary to the Bible, don’t partake, laugh at their crude jokes, or enter into business ownership with an unbeliever. Don’t date an unbeliever, share an apartment, and do not marry an unbeliever. Of course, we can buy and sell from and to unbelievers as befits a Christian. All transactions should be a win, win, for both parties. We purchase or sell a quality product at a fair profitable price. We are not to be beating people down and looking for discounts on every corner. We are to be prosperous showing the goodness of God in our lives and looking out for the good of the other persons (this is agape) whether they are a believer or not. According to our Scripture, what if we don’t separate, and continue to touch the unclean thing? Let’s look at a conversation, prayer, Jesus had with His Father (our Father).
John 17:15-18 (KJV)
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
We are in but not of the world, we are here to show them a better, a much better way. The end of the ways of God, of the Kingdom of God is not just wonderful here but what awaits us is spectacular. What awaits the world here and later is unimaginable awful. One more passage to encourage us all.
Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Looks to me like being yoked to Jesus is a really good deal! If your yoke is not easy and your burden is not light, you are not yoked only to Christ but the one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Repent, come out into freedom shedding the shackles of the world. The unbeliever is demon ruled, they will, even unknowingly, constantly put pressure to came into darkness and bondage. It may look good at first but darkness and bondage await. Remaining unequally yoked once we have knowledge is sin.
