SPIRIT AND TRUTH
Friday – November 2, 2018, Cheshvan 24, 5779
Greeting and welcome back to this wonderful Bible Study taken from the Bible Book of John. God is so good to give us His Word to guide us in all we think, say, and do. Where there is no doubt there is no defeat. The featured picture was taken this summer of yours truly in Rockland Maine. Now, let’s take a look again at our primary Bible Text and then dive into this fascinating material.
John 4:23-24 (KJV)
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
I have mentioned but let me reiterate that Jesus tells us twice in as many verses that we shall, and we must (no other option) worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth. This repetition lets us know that this is the only way we can worship so however man devises to worship apart from that is not worship at all. For example, works apart from faith are physical endeavors and thus are not worship, but works motivated by love (spirit), done in faith (spirit), led of the Spirit of God is worship. Let me remind us all that Truth has at least four prongs, and those are the Word of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Love. When our spirit man is totally submitted (worship) to God our physical man will fall into line and do accordingly. For example, we cannot say that our spirit man is totally submitted to God and be watching porn on the internet, be angry with our brother, passing judgment on others, or in unforgiveness. Total submission of our spirit man to God brings all of the Covenant promises of God into our lives. This submission or worship in short means that the meditations of our heart (thought life) are in line with or are the Word of God and the words we speak are in line with the Word of God or are the Word of God.
Now, let’s turn our attention briefly again to how to think about and define the Truth. Jesus is Truth.
John 14:6 (KJV)
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
The Holy Spirit is Truth.
John 16:13 (KJV)
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
The Word of God, indistinguishable from Jesus is the Truth. The Word of God cleanses us for increasingly effective worship. Worship, submission to the will of God, moves the Kingdom of God forward.
John 17:17 (KJV)
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Finally, love is truth, perhaps the “l” in love should be capitalized “L” indicating God is Love and He is Truth.
Psalm 119:142 (KJV)
142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.
Matthew 22:36-37 (KJV)
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Worshipping the Father in “spirit and in truth” means to be led of the spirit becoming an expression of love, the Word, Jesus, with a free flow of the Holy Spirit through us. Bible (agape) love is at its center obedience to the Word of God. When the Holy Spirit Anoints the Word of God in our mouth supernatural things take place. When we are led of the Holy Spirit we will look like Jesus and we will be saying the things Jesus said, motivated by love doing the works He did and the greater things. Finally, when we listen to and are guided by the Spirit of Truth who is the Holy Spirit this is high worship to the Father. In all of this we become an expression of God in the earth and His goodness (glory) shines forth and the Kingdom will be enlarged for we will be very attractive to the world. If there is one thing the world respects it is results, it also something that God respects. I wonder where the world got that idea? As this encounter with a Samaritan woman unfolds we find that they too are looking for the Messiah, and she says that the Messiah is called the Christ. It apparently is well known in Samaria that Christ will tell the peoples all things. Christ Jesus certainly fills the bill. Then Jesus replies to her with this brief statement.
John 4:26 (KJV)
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
John 4:26 (PassionNTPsa)
26 Jesus said to her, “You don’t have to wait any longer, the Anointed One is here speaking with you—I am the One you’re looking for.”
The words ‘I and am’ are very significant, for it is the name given for the totality of God. The inference is that I am anything and everything you need me to be. This is the name God gave Moses from the “burning bush” and the what Jesus said as they were about to lead Him off to the crucifixion. In both cases a mighty setting free of captives was about to occur. Lord willing, on Monday I will pick up our study with verse twenty-seven.

Numbers 6:24-26 (AMP)
24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
