SCRIPTURE CANNOT BE BROKEN
Friday – June 21, 2019, Sivan 18, 5779
Greetings precious saints of the only living God and welcome back to this fascinating and revealing Bible Study of the Book of John. Today is a selfie of my wonderful bride and myself by the lake here in Oakland. Let me tell you that our God is over the top good. Now let us turn our attention to the Bible Study and read the primary text aloud.
John 10:30-36 (KJV)
30 I and my Father are one.
31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
As you will recall I have been speaking about verse thirty-four and the statement by Jesus (yes Jesus, not David Wood) that it is written in Scripture “ye are gods”. We, yes, you and me, are gods little g and the three persons of the co-equal God are Gods capital G. God (capital G) is all knowing of all things at all times, they are everywhere present at all times, and they are all powerful. You and I brother can know anything that God knows at any given time and our spiritual (even quantum) capacity is very large but not the same. We are already simultaneously present in two places spiritually, and perhaps in the time will have the capacity for greater (more than two at once) but not infinite presence in more than one place. The same power that flows from the Throne can flow through us without any limit but only according to the will and direction of God. I hope no one’s head is spinning and I hope the hair of the religious people is not on fire. One further point that I think is interesting and worth being cognizant of is that Jesus was the Word before the womb of Mary. The Word (Jesus) is the voice of God, all of Scripture came to be when the Word spoke to the Prophets of old. By the will of the Father, Jesus (the Word) is the one who spoke these words in the first place. Now on to verse thirty-five.
John 10:35 (KJV)
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
As you will recall Jesus, the Word, is quoting from the 82nd Psalm, a Psalm of Asaph. According to my research Asaph was one of three Levites appointed by King David to sing in the house of God. The name Asaph means one ‘who gathers together’. If you will review the Psalm again (Wednesday edition) you will find that the meaning of Asaph’s name and the content of the Psalm are pertinent to each other. Jesus as the Word had come to Asaph and gave him the Words of this Holy Scripture referring to the children of God, the sons and daughters of God as gods. Then Jesus (the Word) makes the statement that “scripture cannot be broken”. The word ‘broken’ here means to loose, loosen what is fast, bound, meaning to unbind, or untie according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament. We might say today that we cannot be “fast and loose” with the Scripture, what the Scripture says is what the Scripture says like it or not. We ignore or manipulate Scripture at own peril. Let’s continue with the Amplified translation for increased clarity with the Words of Jesus.
John 10:35-36 (AMP)
35 So men are called gods [by the Law], men to whom God’s message came—and the Scripture cannot be set aside or cancelled or broken or annulled—
36 [If that is true] do you say of the One Whom the Father consecrated and dedicated and set apart for Himself and sent into the world, You are blaspheming, because I said, I am the Son of God?
Jesus says to them, if I am quoting from Scripture, which you revere and say is the Truth why do you call me a blasphemer? You call me a blasphemer not because I quote the Scripture but because I said “I am the Son of God”. Think of this. The Church is happy to say they are children of God, even sons and daughters of God, and that God is their Father but appalled should someone suggest they are like their Father. Lord willing, I will pick up here next week.
