Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus and welcome to this special teaching today concerning Good Friday, Passover on the Hebrew Calendar. Today is the 13th of Nisan, the Feast of Passover starting at approximately 6 pm this evening and is one of the Feasts commanded of the Lord. At 3 P.M. today some 2000 years ago Jesus died on the Cross for us all. At the same time all across Jerusalem many innocent lambs were being sacrificed as well. This writing will commemorate the first Passover observed in ancient Egypt by the Israelites, and the sacrifice of Christ Jesus, our Passover. Christ Jesus was and is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. This is the day He died for you, for me! Let’s thoughtfully and thankfully take some time and review this wonderful redemption account without which we would be without hope, ravaged at will by the devil, and then burn in Hell forever. Notice the instructions God gives Moses and Aaron concerning the Passover Lamb.
Exodus 12:1-3 (KJV)
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.
3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
Exodus 12:5-8 (KJV)
5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
The unblemished first born male lamb to be sacrificed on this first and subsequent Passovers was to be removed from the flock on the tenth of Nisan which starts at 6 P.M. the 7th of April on our Gregorian Calendar this year. This is celebrated today as Palm Sunday. This lamb was observed for five days just as Jesus was in and out of Jerusalem for five days. In the preceding passage the reference to “a male of the first year” is not saying the ram is one year old but is a first-born male. Jesus was not only the first-born in His natural family but the first One born again spiritually among many brethren (Romans 8:29). You and I are among the “many brethren”.
The blood of that first lamb was applied to the side door posts and over the door. The blood applied over the door has a different meaning than the side door posts. The blood applied over the door gives the picture like someone leaning forward looking out a window into the distance. It was a prophetic gesture of looking for the One to come. The sacrifice was to be completely consumed. Remember Jesus spoke of eating His flesh and drinking His Blood. We must completely receive the Lamb sacrificed for us. Well, let’s continue with this wonderful redemption Truth in the following passage.
Exodus 12:13-15 (KJV)
13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.
15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
The blood of these sacrificial animals protected the Israelites year to year when they were obedient to Jehovah and so does the Blood of Jesus protect us in obedience (love) and faith in the Blood. Our unleavened Bread is Jesus, the bread of life. Leaven is a type and shadow of sin. Jesus the Bread of life was sinless and so are we to be sinless. Now, let’s look at the last moments of the Lamb of God on the Cross sacrificed for us but now Resurrected and sitting at the right hand of the Father.
Mark 15:33-38 (KJV)
33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
Lord willing, I will pick up next Friday with our study of 1st John. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
