LOVE AND COMMANDMENTS
Tuesday – November 26, 2019, Cheshvan 28, 5780
Greetings dear friends and partners of this Ministry and welcome back to these powerful and in-depth Bible teachings as we go through the Book of John. This is Thanksgiving week and we hope this is indeed a joyous week filled with thanksgiving for all. When we look for it, the Lord has done marvelous things in every one of our lives. Some of the photos this week are of the coast of Maine taken by Donna’s sister Lynn. The Friday photo will be of Donna and me and was taken at the Church of God International Headquarters in Cleveland Tennessee. Now, let’s turn our attention to our Bible Study and the primary text for today.
John 14:15-21 (KJV)
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Are any of us thinking, enough already with the love and commandments thing. Might we think, I’m just going to keep doing what I am doing and not get anymore commandments remaining ignorant. Yes, there is a certain time of grace and mercy for ignorance however a lack of study is a sin in and of itself and opens the door to Satan to steal, kill, and destroy.
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
I am sure have noticed that the preceding verse is a command, a command from the Throne of God to each and every one of us not a holy suggestion or a give it a college try thing. We can study and be continually approved of God and rightly divide the Word of Truth at all times. We looked at Joshua yesterday, let’s take another look today.
Joshua 1:7 (TLB)
7 You need only to be strong and courageous and to obey to the letter every law Moses gave you, for if you are careful to obey every one of them, you will be successful in everything you do.
Do you, do I, have an interest in being successful in our lives and in the Kingdom of God? I suspect your answer like mine is a resounding yes. Of course, we now have the whole New Testament to learn from and comply with. But don’t let that be or seem overwhelming for we are told plainly that if we will do the law of love (agape) we will be in compliance with all other laws. Again, let us listen to the Master.
Matthew 22:36-40 (KJV)
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Now, let’s listen to the Apostle of love.
1 John 2:3-6 (KJV)
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
He tells us plainly that if we are not keeping His commandments which includes diligently seeking them out, we don’t even know Him. So, is it possible to think we know Him and do not? Apparently so, what a depth of deception. Saying we love Him and going our own way makes us a liar and lying is an abomination to God (Proverbs 6:16-19). However, as we strive and are diligent to keep His Word our love of God is perfected or brought to higher and higher levels of maturity. The goal is to walk as He walked. Yes, that is not only possible but we are commanded to do so.
John 14:12 (KJV)
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

Numbers 6:24-26 (AMP)
24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
