Abraham and Isaac – Part Seven
Welcome back to the Trail of Blood from the Garden of Eden, really from the foundation of the world to the Mercy Seat of Heaven. We have witnessed the first shedding of blood and destruction of an innocent animals body in the Garden on that awful day of sin and death to the sin sacrifice of Noah following the flood. We are now about to deal with the most pivotal event in the redemption account aside from the Cross, the victory in Hell and the Resurrection.
You will recall that God has called Abram out of Ur of the Chaldees and after a sojourn in Haran have finally come to Canaan, the Promised Land. God has made a Blood Covenant with Abram for an heir and the land of Israel. Next there is the sexual encounter with Hagar Sarai’s maid to bring this promised child the natural way. We are feeling the consequences of that in a huge way to this day. Next came the change of name, change of identity from Abram (exalted father) to Abraham (father of a multitude) and the circumcision. We have a change of identity in Christ Jesus. The circumcision looked forward to Jesus shedding His blood and giving us eternal life and taking our sin in His body and giving us His righteousness. Now, God has spoken to Abraham and told him to take his only son whom he loves to Mount Moriah and sacrifice him there and so they left immediately on this three-day journey. Let’s pick up where we left off last week with this passage from Galatians.
Galatians 3:6-9 (KJV)
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. [2]
God preached the Gospel to Abraham, so Abraham knew that the second person of the Godhead, Jesus, the Word made flesh, would come into the earth emptied of all that made Him God, and He would minister in the earth, showing us how to operate in the Kingdom of God. Then He would go to that cross outside the gates and pay the ultimate price of our redemption. Jesus would then be raised from spiritual and physical death on the third day. Jesus then would walk the earth for forty days, before ascending to the Father. Abraham knew his blood covenant rights with God. He knew that if God would raise Jesus from the dead, then He had to be willing to raise Isaac from the dead. Abraham was Elyôn’s covenant partner. Abraham went up the mountain confidently, knowing that his blood covenant partner would raise Isaac from the dead (Hebrews 11:19). Jesus spoke of Abraham seeing His day.
John 8:56 (KJV)
56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
He saw it in bits and pieces starting in Genesis 12:1-3 but he saw it more clearly at the foot of Mount Moriah that day he was there to sacrifice his son, Isaac.
Genesis 22:4 (KJV)
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
The phrase “saw the place afar off” is not referring to distance but to time. He saw Jesus on the Cross on this very same mountain. As they go up the mountain, Isaac becomes curious about this sacrifice; but as we will see, he honors his father and loves him without question.
Genesis 22:7-8 (KJV)
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. [2]
Abraham answers in faith. Abraham knows the day is coming which John the Baptist saw when THE LAMB, provided of God, would come for baptism before entering His earthly ministry (John 1:29). He knows that one way or the other, he will obey God; and he will have his son back from the dead, just as God, the Father, one day would have His Son back from the dead. Isaac loves, honors, and trusts his father without question, and submits to the sacrifice.
Genesis 22:10-13 (KJV)
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. [2]
The time of truth came when God saw that Abraham would not withhold his only son (son of promise).
The Blood Covenant Law of Reciprocity is put in motion, and the Son of God is on the way.
TAKE HOME:
- Jesus was in the ground three days and three nights and so was the trip for Abraham and Issac to Mount Moriah.
- Our identity must be in Him not someone or something else.
- Abraham obeyed the Lord immediately and completely triggered the Blood Covenant Provision of The Law of Reciprocity.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
