SPIRIT OF TRUTH
Thursday – December 19, 2019, Kislev 21, 5780
Greetings precious saints of God and welcome back to another week of this powerful Bible Study of the Book of John. Before we start meditate on and be encouraged by the following Scripture.
1 Peter 2:9 (AMP)
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God’s] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
We are a chosen people and are unlike any before us, currently existing, or to come! We are priests and kings before our God and in the family of God. We are a special people, God is calling us special, and has given for us to do wonderful deeds and shine His marvelous light in all places. The featured picture today is of a beautiful sunrise. Much beauty remains in the world in spite of the fallen state, just image Heaven and what is to come with the new Heaven and the new earth. Now, let’s turn to our primary Bible text and read it aloud.
John 14:15-21 (KJV)
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
I am going to teach again on what the Truth is but first I want to point out something interesting that you likely know intuitively but have not consciously thought. Remember that God is triune, Father (the origin of all thought), Son (the origin of all words), and Holy Spirit (the origin of all power). You and I are triune beings with a mind, a body, and a spirit (spirit, soul, and body) (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Before the womb of Mary Jesus (the Word) was spirit and soul. Now, Jesus, like us, is spirit, soul, and body. That was a little aside, now back to talking about the Truth. In the following text Jesus tells us straight out He is the Truth.
John 14:6 (KJV)
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Well, if Jesus is the Truth, what about the Father, and the Holy Spirit? Just like us, our body can’t be one thing and our spirit and soul another and so on. Jesus, the Word, is the embodiment of the Truth. If God is three persons yet one (Deuteronomy 6:4) it is not possible for one to be something the others are not or do not play an intimate role. With all of this in mind, let’s take a look at the following Scripture.
John 15:26 (KJV)
26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
The Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the Spirit of truth proceeds (to begin or continue a course of action per Smart Lookup) from the Father and testifies of Jesus or points people to Jesus, the Word. You and I are to have no conflict between our spirit, soul, and body just as there is no conflict between the Holy Spirit, the Father, and Jesus. Likewise, there is to be no conflict in the home (or elsewhere) between husband and wife as they are one just as Jesus is one with the Father. Now, let’s review the Truth. It is important as we read in Scripture and listens to sermons, teachings, and so on that we know what various words mean and translate them in our mind to better understand what is being said. We have already established that Jesus is the Truth and the Holy Spirit is the Truth and speaks or points to Jesus, the Word. We also find that the Word is the Truth which is really like saying Jesus, the Word, is the Truth again.
John 17:17 (KJV)
17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
We also can see from the Scripture that love (agape) is the Truth and we also know that God (all three persons) are love. We have studied at some length that love is manifested by obedience to the Word. By the way, we are love since we are made in His image and likeness (have His spiritual DNA). Consider the following.
Psalm 119:142 (KJV)
142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and thy law is the truth.
As you know, when Jesus was asked what the greatest commandments were, He told them that loving God and our neighbor trumped all.
Matthew 22:37-40 (KJV)
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Love reigns over all and is equivalent to obedience to God, our love with a willing heart results in the abundant life.
Isaiah 1:19 (KJV)
19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
