IF ANY LACK WISDOM

Greetings dear saints of God and others and welcome to our ongoing study of the Bible Book of James. Now to our text for today.
James 1:5-7 (KJV)
5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
Just prior to this we have been looking at the interaction of temptation, faith, patience, and the promises of God manifesting in our lives. Let’s review the perfect work of patience.
James 1:4 (KJV)
4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
Do you want to be mature in Christ Jesus, whole in every area of life, wanting nothing? I would think the response would be a resounding yes. So, why aren’t we all there? Perhaps our faith was weak, not fully persuaded of the Word of God. Perhaps our love (agape/agapao) walk was faulty, perhaps our patience (the exercise of our will to endure) was lacking or some combination. This is very common as we look around the body of Christ. Jesus said you will know them by their fruit. The goodness (glory) of God will be evident in our lives. Of course, religion has devised all sorts of evil explanations for the lack of God’s goodness in our lives.
Next James moves into a discussion of wisdom. Wisdom is the highest use of knowledge. In the Complete Word Study Dictionary New Testament, you will find that the word “wisdom” is a feminine noun and is singular. This means that the amount of wisdom one possesses is completely up to the individual. How willing are you to study the Word of God? How necessary do you think your study of the Word of God is? The fact that wisdom is feminine in gender means that wisdom is productive, brings increase. Let’s explore the following Scriptures along these lines.
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Right off the bat we see that study is required, it is required to be approved of God. Do you want to be approved of God? Do any of us want to stand before Jesus at the Judgement Seat of Christ and be ashamed? We will be ashamed for we did not study, we chose to remain ignorant. It is a choice. What took priority? Therefore, we did not bring the glory of God into our lives and were a poor witness of the Kingdom of God? The lack of study resulted in a deficiency of knowledge and the exercise of wisdom. The lack of knowledge, Bible knowledge, absent traditions of men, doctrines of demons, sacred cows, and extrabiblical ideas prevents rightly (correctly) dividing the Word of Truth. What about this next verse?
Hosea 4:6 (KJV)
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.
This is verse many quote only the first part but leave off the rest of the verse. If we were destroyed solely for a lack of knowledge we would all be destroyed for in comparison to God, we are woefully ignorant. The Word goes on to say that we are destroyed because we reject knowledge. When we fail to study with ears to hear and eyes to see with other priorities taking the place of study, we are rejecting knowledge. When we believe the traditions of men, the doctrines of demons, and sacred cows instead of the whole counsel of Scripture we are rejecting knowledge. The consequence is stealing, killing, and destroying in our lives. Read and meditate the whole of Hosea 4:6 it should cause quite the sobering.
Our primary text (James 1:5) tells us that if we lack wisdom for a situation, we are to ask God. The primary way that God gives us wisdom is through His Word. Whoa, we’re back to studying. We can also get leadership through the Holy Spirit within. We have a book that contains 66 individual books and all of it is packed with what we need to know (knowledge) and do (wisdom).
TAKE HOME:
- If we lack wisdom we are to ask God. The primary way He gives us wisdom is through His Word.
- We are commanded to study the Word of God to rightly or correctly divide it. There are no other words or priorities higher than this.
- We must be very careful not to reject God’s knowledge.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
