Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome to this ongoing study of “Father Abraham”. We will be reviewing Abraham’s life for it is encouraging for us all to see how God can and does flow in and through imperfect people to accomplish His will. Abrahams life was pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. I started this series of teachings showing the glorious end result then we went to the beginning to see the sausage be made. Now, let’s continue examining Abraham’s journey. The promised child has come and now comes a brutal testing of the Blood Covenant forged between the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, and Abraham.
Genesis 22:1-5 (KJV)
1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
God, the Father speaks to Abraham and tells him to sacrifice Isaac. Can you imagine! Do you recognize the Messianic language here with “thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest”? The Father is sending them to Mount Moriah, Jerusalem, where His Son, the Christ will hang on a Cross sacrificed for all mankind some 2000 years in the future. Abraham knew the voice of God, what about you? Abraham didn’t rebuke the command as the devil or bad pizza, he didn’t have to pray about it, or consult the Pastor, but immediately, the next morning, left for Mount Moriah with Isaac. The two young men are a type and shadow of the two thieves on crosses beside Christ.
Now, let’s focus on verse four. This verse at least in part explains his confidence in verse five. The number four (verse four) has to do with revelation and authority. First what about “on the third day”? Hopefully you saw that immediately as referencing the Cross and the Resurrection of the coming Son of Promise. Now, what about the phrase he “saw the place afar off”? This is not talking about physical distance but time. It seems that in a moments time he was shown Jesus on the Cross and His Resurrection. Knowing he was in Blood Covenant with God, if God would do that for His Son, He would do it for Abrahams son, Isaac. This is the Law of Reciprocity. Now, to the faith chapter.
Hebrews 11:17-19 (KJV)
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
Even here after the Cross the coming of the promised Messiah we see Messianic language “his only begotten son”. Verse nineteen of Hebrews 11, the faith verse, tells us Abraham was fully persuaded and had in his faith imagination seen Isaac rise from the dead. In a moment, let’s look at where God told verse eighteen to Abraham. The Word “seed” in Hebrews 11:18 is masculine in gender and singular in number, referring to the One, the Christ. Eighteen is the number of bondage. The One is coming to give us all a path out of bondage. Before they ascended Mount Moriah Abraham was fully pursued that Isaac would be raised from the dead.
Genesis 21:12 (KJV)
12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
Here again the word “seed” is masculine in gender and singular in number referring to the Christ.
TAKE HOME:
- When we here the voice of God, see His voice in Scripture we don’t need to pray but obey immediately.
- Jesus, the One promised, has given us all a glorious path out of the bondage of Satan. It is a choice, choose wisely.
- Jesus, the Christ, came through Isaac by the faith of Abraham, the father of us all.
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
