I KNOW THAT THOU FEAREST GOD

Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome to this ongoing study of “Father Abraham”. We will be reviewing Abraham’s life for it is encouraging for us all to see how God can and does flow in and through imperfect people to accomplish His will. Abrahams life was pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. I started this series of teachings showing the glorious end result then we went to the beginning to see the sausage be made. Now, let’s continue examining Abraham’s journey. The promised child has come and now Abraham is in the midst of a brutal testing of the Blood Covenant forged between the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, and Abraham.
God, the Father, has commanded Abraham to take Isaac to Mount Moriah and sacrifice him there. Abraham is the only one that knows the purpose of this three-day trip. Abraham fully trusted God or he would not have started on this trip with Isaac. As they arrive at the foot of Mount Moriah Abraham gets more insight as he sees the place afar off. He saw the Sacrifice of God’s Son and His Resurrection. He knew that if God would do that for His Son, then God was obligated to do the same for his son Isaac. This is the Law of Reciprocity an obligation of Blood Covenant. Now let’s join the test, put yourself in their shoes.
Genesis 22:8-12 (KJV)
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
We don’t know how old Isaac is at this point. My guess is that he is at least thirteen and perhaps as old as thirty-three. At least thirteen, the age of bar mitzvah, the age of understanding to give consent. As old as thirty-three the age of Jesus on the Cross. This would make Abraham between 113 and 133 years of age. In verse nine of our text there is no indication that Isaac resisted his father in the least physically or verbally. This is a man (considered a man at age 13) who trusted God and his father. In verse ten, the number of responsibility, Abraham has lifted the knife to plunge it into his sons chest killing him. God sees this physical move but more importantly he sees the heart, the intents and thoughts of Abraham, he sees that he is indeed committed and will sacrifice Isaac as commanded.
Abraham’s arm is lifted with the knife, and I suspect Isaac is holding his breath. At that moment when God, the Father, sees that Abraham is committed and the son is a willing participant He speaks through an angel from Heaven. Just think about it. This angel to talking to Abraham who is on the earth from Heaven. This atmosphere around the earth is 100 miles thick, than how thick is the second heaven (outer space) before you get to Heaven? This alone is supernatural. Abraham is hearing the voice of this angel in his natural ears and is responding with his physical voice. The angel of the Lord tells Abraham not to harm the lad and tells him why. This of course is even better than being killed and raised from the dead or having to kill then see the person raised from the dead. This was obedience to the 9th degree but beyond that it was absolute honoring of Blood Covenant. What about you and I? These are human being just like us with as we are told in James that Elijah had passions just like us. In fact, they were not saved, they did not have the indwelling Holy Spirit, and they were not baptized in the Holy Spirit endued with Power. So, what is our excuse? We say we fear (honor) God and we sing about it but do we?
TAKE HOME:
- Do we obey without question or argument when we don’t fully understand why?
- Does the Lord know that we fear that we will and do honor Him?
- Do we confess our willingness to obey and do we promptly obey the Lord, the Word, in all things?
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
