KINGS AND PRIESTS TO OUR GOD

Greetings to one and all and welcome back to our exploration of the Bible character named Melchizedek. I believe that the last two teachings concerning him have established that he was a real historical figure and not a preincarnate Jesus. Melchizedek is indeed a type and shadow of Jesus as our study will clearly show. This very brief account in Genesis including him illuminates several foundational Truths for that time and ours. Now, let’s move to our text for today.
Genesis 14:17-18 (KJV)
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Last teaching I mentioned how throughout our lives the devils are sending people into our lives and God is sending people into our lives. It is our job to discern or distinguish between them. And don’t think that the ones the demons send won’t be from your Church or family.
Melchizedek means king of right or king or righteousness. This man is also the king of Salem which is Jerusalem in later years. We are also told in our text that Melchizedek is priest of the most high God. So, he is both priest and king. Who else is both king and priest?
Hebrews 4:14-16 (KJV)
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
You see Melchizedek was a foreshadowing of the Messiah to come who would be a High Priest for all. His sacrifice for sin was one time for all. What about the king part?
1 Timothy 6:14-16 (AMP)
14 To keep all His precepts unsullied and flawless, irreproachable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Anointed One),
15 Which [appearing] will be shown forth in His own proper time by the blessed, only Sovereign (Ruler), the King of kings and the Lord of lords,
16 Who alone has immortality [in the sense of exemption from every kind of death] and lives in unapproachable light, Whom no man has ever seen or can see. Unto Him be honor and everlasting power and dominion. Amen (so be it).
And guess who else is a priest to our Lord and a king on the earth? You and me dear ones, if you’re saved.
Revelation 1:6 (NKJV)
6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
1 Peter 2:9 (KJV)
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Dear ones do we believe that we are priests unto our God and Father as well as kings on the earth to function in His delegated authority? We are vital intercessors for others before the Throne of our Heavenly Father, and we are to exercise our delegated authority in our areas of jurisdiction. It seems to me that the body of Christ as a whole is doing neither one. Again, we can see that Melchizedek is a clear type and shadow of the Messiah to come and even of those who will believe upon the Messiah.
TAKE HOME:
- Melchizedek was a priest to God most High and so is Jesus.
- Melchizedek was a King, king of Salem and king of righteousness (what is right and just in the eyes of God) and so is Jesus our Lord a King.
- You and I little ones are priests unto our God and Father as well as kings under the King of kings functioning in delegated authority on the earth.
