Greetings dear children of Father God and all others who are joining today. Welcome to this ongoing and nearly complete study of the Bible Book of James. I see this as a very instructive to the point Bible Book. Let’s us all be sure that we have come with ears to hear and eyes to see. Jesus spoke of this often.
Matthew 11:15 (KJV)
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
The hearing here is not just being aware of the sound or even cataloging information, it has to do with coming to understand and it is implied then to do. If we haven’t come to understand and do, then reading or watching this video is no more than an empty religious exercise. Now, let’s go to our primary Bible text for today.
James 5:10-11 (NIV)
10 Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
11 As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
Today we will be looking at the Book of Job, what happened and why. The word “persevered” in the NIV or patience in the KJV means to stay under. Under what? God. Many believe that Job was singled out and tested by God. Is that true or could it be that the “curse causeless” did not alight (Proverbs 26:2) on Job any more than it does on any of us. Let’s look at Job.
Job 1:1 (NIV)
1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.
So far so good. We also know if you read the Book that Job was the richest man in the east. Nowhere does it mention that he trusted his wealth more than God, however. So, what happened?
Job 1:5 (NIV)
5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, “Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular custom.
The King James Bible says he prayed and offered sacrifice saying the same prayer continually. What is this? Ignorance, fear, traditions of men or something else? Well, we will find out. Jesus tells us not to be repetitious in our prayers. The root of repetition seems to be fear.
Matthew 6:6-8 (NIV)
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Finally in the third chapter Job tells us the problem. It was fear for his children. That fear not only cost him his wealth but the lives of his children. Fear is deadly.
Job 3:25 (NIV)
25 What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.
Let’s take a look at what Isaiah writes about fear.
Isaiah 54:14 (KJV)
14 In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.
Righteousness is free of fear. Fear opens the door to oppression and terror, refusing to fear keeps oppression and terror away from our lives. Finally, after long conversations with God and his so-called comforters he comes to a place of repentance.
Job 42:5-6 (NIV)
5 My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.
6 Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”
In repentance the compassion and mercy of God shines forth in his life and so will it in your and mine when we repent.
Job 42:12-13 (NIV)
12 The LORD blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the first. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys.
13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters.
TAKE HOME:
- Job was a man committed to God in good circumstances and bad, what about you and me?
- Are you fearful concerning your children? Is there something to be learned from the account of Job? Fear opens the door for the thief to steal, kill, and destroy.
- Recognizing our sin, repenting, will bring the compassion and mercy of God and full restitution and more.
Lord willing, I will resume right here Monday.
There are many voices in this world and they all have significance. Which ones are you listening to?
Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
