WHAT ABOUT THE WINE AND THE BREAD?

Greetings and welcome back to our study of Melchizedek. I was asked a few weeks ago if this person found in Scripture was the preincarnate Christ Jesus. We have established in the prior teachings that Melchizedek was not the preincarnate Christ but was a human historical figure who was a type and shadow of the Christ to come. Let’s go ahead and again read our primary text from the Bible Book of Genesis.
Genesis 14:17-18 (KJV)
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
In review remember that throughout our lives the devils send people into our lives and God sends people into our lives. It is not always obvious which are which and therefore we need the Holy Spirit to help us and the gift of discerning of spirits. The name Melchizedek means king of righteousness meaning what is right and what is just. The foundation of the throne of our God is righteousness and justice (Psalm 89:14). He was king of Salem, later named Jerusalem. Salem means peace, he was king of peace, and our Lord and Saviour is the Prince of Peace. And Melchizedek was both king and priest and so is Christ Jesus.
This brings us to the eighteenth verse and the reference to bread and wine. I think we all instantly recognize this as the Communion Table. I find it interesting that this topic comes up now right in the midst of the Passover season. Yesterday the teaching was on the Triumphant Entry which the Christian community celebrates on Palm Sunday. Wednesday the 1st of April I will be teaching about Passover and the crucifixion. We will also take Communion that day so have the elements ready. And then next Saturday, the 4th of April there will be teaching on the Resurrection. One might ask where this idea come from, why did Melchizedek brings these elements to Abraham and the others? We are not told that I am aware of, in Scripture specifically, what this represented.
We know from the full counsel of Scripture, having the full benefit of all 66 books, that the wine represents the Blood of Jesus, and the bread represents the Body of Jesus. However, that is not told to us between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 14:18. We see however in the Garden of Eden on the Day of Sin and Death that blood was necessary to cover sinful flesh.
Genesis 3:21 (KJV)
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
Obviously, you can’t get the skin off an animal without shedding blood. We see here that sin always requires the shedding of blood, requires death.
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Jesus took care of this sin and death problem; we are not doomed to eternal death when we make Jesus Lord. Shout hallelujah with the next verse!
Hebrews 9:22 (KJV)
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
What about bread? Let’s look at a couple of Scriptures and end for the day.
Genesis 3:19 (KJV)
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
The word bread in this verse is the same Hebrew word as in our primary text meaning food (for man or beast), especially bread, or grain according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Prior to this Adam and Eve had access to the tree of life. On The Day of Sin and Death man no longer had access to the “bread of life” but got his sustenance from the earth but the Bread of Life was on the way! I will speak more of the Communion Table when I pick this up again next Sunday.
TAKE HOME:
- The Blood of Jesus purges us of sin.
- The bread, the tree of life (Jesus) gives us life eternal.
- The Blood of Jesus reversed the sin and death problem giving eternal life and His broken body brought wholeness to us and the promise of a glorified body.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Sunday the 5th of April. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
