Greetings to all who have come to this teaching from the Bible Book of James. I will be continuing in the fifth chapter. As I have mentioned many times this is an instructional, corrective to the point Book. So, let’s go to our primary Bible text for today.
James 5:13-15 (NIV)
13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.
14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
I suspect that much of this passage is familiar to many of you participating in this study of the Book of James. I will continue today with the thirteenth verse of the primary text and perhaps conclude so we can move forward, only as God leads. For just a moment we will reflect back on the word “merry” in the KJV and “happy” in the NIV Bible. This word transliterated from Greek to English as “euthymia” which is a state of tranquility and well-being, or a calm steadiness of mind. The abnormal states of mind relate to bipolar disorder with disorders of mania and/or depression.
Should the Christian be euthymic? Of course they should! It is a state of tranquility, this come from walking in Bible peace. It is all based on knowledge, believing that knowledge of who we are in Him and in the Kingdom of God and who He is. We confess that knowledge and walk (do) in it. We walk in well-being in every arena of life because we have covenants of wealth and health as well as absolute protection from the curse, from our demonic enemies as we walk in obedience to the Word. Walk in obedience to the Word not the traditions of men, the doctrines of demons, nor sacred cows. Prove all things! We are well equipped to have a “calm steadiness of mind,” it is a fruit of the spirit (a disciplined mind) (Galatians 5:22-23).
Now let’s consider the terminal phrase of the verse “let him sing psalms”. In the KJV and some others the word “psalms” is used and in other translations the word “praise” is used. The Greek word is transliterated to English as psallō according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary meaning To play a stringed instrument or to sing a hymn. Musicians who play upon an instrument were said to pluck the strings or simply pluck. The word came to signify the making of music in any fashion according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament. Although it is not mentioned directly in the definition of the word “psallō” it was apparently generally understood that the songs sung were the Psalms or other Scripture. The following verse is a use of the same word by the Apostle Paul.
Ephesians 5:19 (KJV)
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
It seems to me that singing and listening to Scriptural songs is a way to maintain a merry or happy attitude, to be euthymic. I emphasize “Scriptural” because many of the songs that are sung in Churches are not entirely Scriptural, they sound good, they sound right, they sound religious, but they are not the Truth. Only the Truth can make you free. I am not saying that singing unscriptural songs (secular) is a sin but remember this.
1 Corinthians 14:10 (KJV)
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
All voices carry a message. What is the message? Is the voice bringing an evil message or a righteous message? What are you meditating upon? What are you speaking (singing)? Let us be sure that we fill our thoughts and our mouths with thoughts and words that are not contrary to Gods’ Word, to the Truth. Let us take good care of our thought life for it directly influences our will, our emotions, adds to our subconscious, and our belief system. Our thought life directly affects our love walk, which is the strength of our faith which is the currency of the Spirit to change this natural world.
TAKE HOME:
- Are you doing all you know to do to maintain and strengthen a state of euthymia? Euthymia is a state of tranquility and well-being, or a calm steadiness of mind.
- Do you routinely hum, sing, or listen to Scripture or Scriptural songs around the house, in your car, and so on? Are they indeed Scriptural?
- All voices have significance, what voices are you thinking about, repeating with your mouth, and acting upon? Are they taking you toward evil or righteousness. Are they the Word of God?
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
