IS ANY SICK AMONG YOU

Greetings dear saints and all others continuing or joining this study of the Book of James. I have spent quite a lot of time in the preceding days on the thirteenth verse of our primary text, however today it looks like we will be moving forward.
James 5:13-15 (KJV)
13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
In the thirteenth verse we dealt with the one who is afflicted or in the midst of a hardship which could include physical or mental illness. The advice of the Holy Spirit is to pray. What is our response? Do we first turn to the remedies of the earth or the remedies the advice of Heaven? Affliction is a severe intrusion upon our peace. Bible peace is a huge word in both the Hebrew and Greek texts. It is an altogether different word than salvation but looks just like salvation.
Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
In Isaish 53:5 the word “peace” is shālôm meaning to be safe, to be well, happy, friendly, welfare (safety, health, prosperity), health, prosperity, to be at peace, in rest, and well according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Jesus took any uproar disturbance of peace and all of these things listed are ours in Jesus name. We walk these things out by faith, by meditation on the Word of God not the problems the devils are using to disturb our peace.
Now, let’s turn to verse fourteen of our primary text. The word “sick” here includes having disease but also being feeble. Notice it says that the one who is sick should call for the elders of the Church or body of Christ. All too often we find the Church hunting down people to pray for, that does not work. The key to healing is that the sick person must desire healing and they must be in faith for their healing based on the Word of God. You and I can desire them to be healed and be in faith based on the Word of God which is important but if they are not desiring and in faith they will not be healed. Do not be quick to lay hands on people.
1 Timothy 5:22 (KJV)
22 Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.
Prayer lines or prayer chains are common today. Concerning prayer chains, healing will only take place if the intended recipient is in faith or falls under the jurisdiction or authority of one who is in faith. Many will get in the prayer line to see what will happen, hoping for healing, not in faith fully persuaded like the woman with the issue of blood. Some will say the right things but do not really believe, we must discern if they need teaching or prayer. Let us be careful to only lay hands on people who ask or by the Spirit, word of knowledge, you know they are in faith.
Acts 14:8-10 (KJV)
8 And there sat a certain man at Lystra, impotent in his feet, being a cripple from his mother’s womb, who never had walked:
9 The same heard Paul speak: who stedfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
10 Said with a loud voice, Stand upright on thy feet. And he leaped and walked.
This man heard the gospel, faith comes by hearing the gospel and the Apostle Paul “perceiving” his faith commanded him to stand, he did and was immediately healed evidenced by the leaping and walking. Today, it seems to me that we are far to quick to lay hands on people.
TAKE AWAY:
- Bible peace is ours, let’s not let anything rob us but stand firm in faith. Remember it is not a feeling or something in this temporal realm but a spiritual reality which will transform the physical.
- It is vital that the sick or feeble person call for the elders in faith.
- Let us not be quick to lay hands on people.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
