IF ANY ERR FROM THE TRUTH

Greetings and welcome to one and all. The Lord is good to all. I will be continuing today in the Bible Book of James. I see this as a very straight forward and instructive Book in the ways of Heaven. Of course, one still cannot just read it, it must be studied with ears to hear and eyes to see. Reading Scripture is good and right but it is important that we dig beneath the surface to walk with Him in His plan for us and in all that we are heir to in Him. Now let’s go to our primary text for today.
James 5:16-18 (KJV)
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
17 Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
18 And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
Yesterday we explored the phrase “effectual fervent prayer” looking at the words and the account of Elijah and rain from 1st Kings. Prayer in general is talking with God. There are different types or aspects of talking to God. In this case God told Elijah there was to be a drought so Elijah spoke the words, the command, and God fulfilled His Word. Please know that had Elijah not declared the will of God on the earth it would not have happened. Makes one wonder how much of the will of God remains undone on the earth and in our individual lives. I suspect the God in control folks are having a spasm about now exclaiming perhaps something like this “God does what He wants, when He wants, and how He wants!” Perhaps they even pounded the table exclaiming “He is sovereign!” Do you know the definition of sovereign? Controller is not part of the definition. I have one question, in what Bible did you find that?
Did you notice that a qualifier for the effective fervent prayer is a righteous man (or woman). A righteous person is one not only in right standing (saved) but doing right. As I have pointed out many times, one can be saved and on their way to Heaven but not doing right. Anyone that has children or has been a supervisor of people knows this. The child is still part of the family but not in line for the full benefits of the family. Same with the errant employee, still an employee but not in line for promotion, bonuses or other company benefits. Further comment on verses sixteen through eighteen. The Holy Spirit through the human author James the Just wants us to understand that Elijah was a human being just like all of us today. Let’s look at the word “passions” and the seventeenth verse in the Amplified Bible.
James 5:17 (AMP)
17 Elijah was a human being with a nature such as we have [with feelings, affections, and a constitution like ours]; and he prayed earnestly for it not to rain, and no rain fell on the earth for three years and six months.
We tend to think of some of these people in Scripture as some sort of super saint. They were not, they like Jesus, had to deal with all of the temptation of life just like us. Jesus sinned not. All the others had varying degrees of success but were persistent and repented when off track. Now, let’s delve into the last two verses of this beautiful Book concluding our study of James.
James 5:19-20 (AMP)
19 [My] brethren, if anyone among you strays from the Truth and falls into error and another [person] brings him back [to God],
20 Let the [latter] one be sure that whoever turns a sinner from his evil course will save [that one’s] soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins [procure the pardon of the many sins committed by the convert].
Verse twenty should be very sobering to all of us. Let me throw out a question. What about the traditions of men, the doctrines of demons, and the sacred cows that are revered in Churches, the body of Christ? These are all at odds with Scripture there for evil and are sin. This is talking about one going from life to death, spiritual life (saved) to spiritual death (unsaved). Begs the mantra of once saved always saved. The idea “shall hide a multitude of sins” is not talking about covering them us but blotting them out with the Blood of Jesus in repentance. The Apostle Paul speaks in a similar manner in his letter to the Galatians and us.
Galatians 6:1-2 (KJV)
1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.
2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
We don’t talk about the fault (sin) with others even under the guise of “we need to pray for so and so” we come alongside them in all humility. The Law of Christ is the Law of Love, agape, Divine love.
TAKE HOME:
- Elijah and others in Scripture were not some sort of super saint but were just like us.
- Let us all labor to not err from the Truth.
- Let us approach all brethren in sin with mercy, compassion, in humility and seek to turn them from error that they not enter into spiritual death.
As the Lord wills, I will return with fresh revelation on Monday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
