CONFESS YOUR FAULTS ONE TO ANOTHER

Greetings and welcome to one and all. The Lord is good to all. I will be continuing today in the Bible Book of James. I see this as a very straight forward and instructive Book in the ways of Heaven. Of course, one still cannot just read it, it must be studied with ears to hear and eyes to see. Reading Scripture is good and right but it is important that we dig beneath the surface to walk with Him in His plan for us and in all that we are heir to in Him. Now let’s go to our primary text for today.
James 5:14-16 (KJV)
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Over the last few days, we have been working down through this passage and think we have had great enlightenment. If we find something in Scripture contrary to our tradition, how we do it in our Church or denomination, what do we do? We chuck the traditions of men and embrace the Word of God. Next in verse fifteen we come to a reference to sin and forgiveness. Here once again we see a clear connection between being sick and sin. I know this is a rather unpopular topic, but our controversy is not with the messenger but with the source of the Word, the Lord. It’s interesting that sins is in the pleural. This is not a one-off sin but a recurring sin apparently. And these may or may not be sins of which the person is ignorant. Remember the curse causeless does not alight (Proverbs 26:2). Let’s review the following passage with particular focus on verse nine.
1 John 1:8-10 (KJV)
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
It is our responsibility to discover what opened the door for the thief to enter to steal, kill, and destroy. When we are cleansed of sin the door is closed to all the curse. Let’s move into the sixteenth verse of our primary text and look at it in the Amplified Bible, which really explodes it for our understanding.
James 5:16 (AMP)
16 Confess to one another therefore your faults (your slips, your false steps, your offenses, your sins) and pray [also] for one another, that you may be healed and restored [to a spiritual tone of mind and heart]. The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].
It seems to me that this command in verse sixteen to confess our sins or areas where we have stepped away from Scripture is in itself a powerful incentive to think hard about sin. We are commanded not to keep it a secret or pretend we don’t ever sin. Of course, it is possible not to sin, but I suspect most of us are not really there yet. Much sin occurs in our thought life especially in the area of thinking one thing and saying and doing another. That is a lack of integrity. The real us is what we believe in our thought life.
Proverbs 23:7 (AMP)
7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. As one who reckons, he says to you, eat and drink, yet his heart is not with you [but is grudging the cost].
TAKE HOME:
- We are to confess our shortcomings (sins) to one another and receive forgiveness of the Lord.
- We are to be men and women of integrity, thinking, saying, and doing all in agreement.
- Getting the sin our of our lives brings healing, wholeness.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
