WHO CHOOSE THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU?

Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome to this ongoing study of “Father Abraham”. As I have said this will by no means be a definitive study of Abraham. I teach the Bible from the Bible. That is not to say that extra-Biblical sources cannot be useful and informative. However, we must never forget that these sources outside of Scripture are not Scripture. We will be reviewing Abraham’s life for it is encouraging for us all to see how God can and does flow in and through imperfect people to accomplish His will. The testimony of Abrahams life is pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. I am starting this series of teachings kind of from the end then we will see how the glorious end was achieved. Now, to the start of Abram then Abraham’s journey with the Lord to fulfillment of the most important promise ever.
Genesis 11:29-32 (KJV)
29 And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.
30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.
Many start the story of Abram/Abraham with Genesis chapter twelve. I am starting with the eleventh chapter for it seems that God’s call to Abram came earlier then chapter twelve. We see here that Sarai the wife of Abram is barren. These folks lived near the Euphrates River in modern day Iraq. They were headed to Canaan, the whole group, but stopped in Haran which is in southern modern-day Turkey or perhaps Syria. Still a long way from Canaan and with an entourage God did not tell Abram to go with.
Genesis 12:1-5 (KJV)
1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
Insight: Are these instructions clear to you? Before we get too judgement let’s examine ourselves and see who we have taken with us contrary to the Lord’s instructions.
2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
Insight: Looking back to verse one we find the qualifier for verses two and three. Abram with Sarai were to go by themselves to the land of Canaan. So far, we don’t see obedience to God’s command. It is a sort of obedience, ever been there? The Lord tells him that when he and Sarai are in Canaan then he will become a great nation, he will be well known, and he will bring empowerment to many. God also promises that that those who bless him God will bless but those who curse or hinder Abram will be cursed by God. Then we come to the pivotal phrase “and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed”. Abram, you are the one who is to open the door for the Messiah into the earth!
4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.
At least the whole entourage didn’t come with Abram but still quite a company of peoples. It is still disobedience to the command of God. Finally, Abram and Lot will separate with Lot and his company going to Sodom. Sodom is overrun with Lot and the people of the city with their stuff are taken captive. Word comes to Abram and he goes to rescue Lot. We will pick up this engaging account right here tomorrow.
TAKE HOME:
- When God gives instructions do them not them plus.
- When God gives a command don’t add to or subtract from and do it immediately.
- In Abram all of the families of the earth were to be blessed and now are blessed beyond words.
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
