Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome to this ongoing study of “Father Abraham”. We are reviewing Abraham’s life for it is encouraging for us all to see how God can and does flow in and through imperfect people to accomplish His will. Abrahams life was pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. I started this series of teachings on the 18th of May showing the glorious end result of his faith. Then we went to the beginning of his story to see the sausage being made. Now, let’s continue examining Abram then Abraham’s journey with the Lord to the fulfillment of the most important promise ever, the birth of a promised child to the birth of the Promised Child. Let’s move forward.
Genesis 21:1-6 (KJV)
1 And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.
2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.
3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.
5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.
6 And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.
The Word of God became flesh and the promised son through whom the Messiah would come is in the earth. As instructed of God this promised child is named Isaac.
Genesis 17:19 (KJV)
19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
The name Isaac means “he laughs”. You may remember that Sarai, later Sarah, laughed when she overheard the Lord tell Abram that she would bear a son. We will get to that shortly. I also want to point out that the word “seed” in Genesis 17:19 is singular in number and masculine in gender. It is referring to the Messiah to come. The Bible Numerology is also very interesting here. Nineteen is the number of faith, seventeen the number of victory, and one (Genesis first Book) union with God. So, in union with God victory comes by faith. Now, let’s look at Sarah’s laugh. Remember three men have appeared to Abram and one is the Lord and two are angels who will continue to Sodom and destruction of Sodom.
Genesis 18:9-14 (KJV)
9 And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
10 And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
13 And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
The “he” in verse ten, the number of responsibility, is the Lord affirms to Abram that Sarah will indeed have a son and she overhears. We see that she “laughed within herself” in verse twelve. Then a question is asked in verse fourteen “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?” This is a question we must answer in the face of circumstances and negative voices with a resounding NO nothing is to hard for my Lord. This laugh was not a laugh of unbelief, but I think of amusement or even joy. We know it was not unbelief which is sin for that would have brought consequences. Let’s look at a response that was unbelief and brought consequences.
Luke 1:18-20 (KJV)
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
TAKE HOME:
- It is okay to laugh about the promises of God but never in unbelief, doubt, but in delight.
- Absolutely nothing is too hard for our God.
- Unbelief is sin and has negative consequences for it opens the door to the thief and God will not ignore.
As the Lord wills, I will return tomorrow with fresh revelation. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
