PRAYING ABOUT ALL THINGS

Greetings to all who have come to this teaching from the Bible Book of James. I will be continuing in the fifth chapter. As I have mentioned many times this is an instructional, corrective to the point Book. So, let’s go to our primary Bible text for today.
James 5:13-15 (NIV)
13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.
14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
I suspect that much of this passage is familiar to many of you participating in this study of the Book of James. Concerning verse thirteen lets look at a little Bible Numerology. James is the twentieth Book of the New Testament and is the number of redemption. Being redeemed is the action of being saved from sin, error or evils including various bondages. So, when we are born again that is the really big redemption when we changed fathers, our destiny, and our destination for eternity. However, there are many redemptions that may occur in the lifetime of a believer. Have any of you sinned since salvation, have any of you entered into error since salvation, or thought, said, and did evil? It seems to me this would include everyone excepting Jesus. Those of you who think it does not apply to you are in deception and pride (sin). Deception will follow pride. Five is the Bible number of Grace which is a facet of God the Holy Spirit working in our favor even when we don’t deserve it. Finally, thirteen means depravity and rebellion. Just a brief comment. We humans tend to separate various sins into categories and levels. Anything contrary to the Word of God, to what we know to do is depravity and rebellion.
I think we can see from our study of this Book of James and the numerology we just reviewed that it is all aimed at directing us away from depravity and rebellion, by talking to God, and gaining redemption, salvation from our sin, our error, our evil doing by the work of Grace. Grace is God’s Hand extended on our behalf. Our primary text starts off asking if any of us are afflicted which primarily means to be in hardship. This seems to be more than threatened hardship but a hardship the person is experiencing. For that to happen the person had to let the enemy in. Perhaps through ignorance, error in thought, or sin. Let’s look at this verse in the Amplified Bible.
James 5:13 (AMP)
13 Is anyone among you afflicted (ill-treated, suffering evil)? He should pray. Is anyone glad at heart? He should sing praise [to God].
So, what does the Holy Spirit tell us to do through James. He says to pray. This word pray means to supplicate meaning to talk to God, petition God, request, and entreat Him to be granted release from the affliction. According to the online dictionary supplicate means to ask for humbly or earnestly, as by praying. The implication in this particular Scripture is that the person does not know why they are afflicted. When faced with not knowing why, here is what Jesus had to say.
Matthew 7:7-11 (KJV)
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone?
10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
As I conclude todays teaching let me ask. How do we avoid entering into affliction or is it inevitable? We will address this more tomorrow. As a peek ahead let me say that since ignorance abounds in all of us and many are lousy with traditions of men, doctrines of demons, and sacred cows hardship is inevitable. What we think about it and how we address hardship makes all the difference whether it be financial, in our health or some other area.
TAKE HOME:
- Let’s ask ourselves, how do we respond to hardships.
- When we start to experience hardship is our first response to seek the Word of God and talk to God about it?
- Do we believe Jesus when He says, “For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened”?
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
