HOW DID THE THIEF GET IN

Greetings to all who have come to this teaching from the Bible Book of James. I will be continuing in the fifth chapter. As I have mentioned many times this is an instructional, corrective to the point Book. So, let’s go to our primary Bible text for today.
James 5:13-15 (NIV)
13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.
14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
I suspect that much of this passage is familiar to many of you participating in this study of the Book of James. As we discussed yesterday it appears that this person is afflicted, and they do not know why. This word afflicted means to be suffering hardship which could be in the body (an illness), financial, or some other arena of life. This is not a threatened hardship but one we find ourselves in the midst of. The curse and death entered the earth by way of man’s sin. Sin gives the thieves (demon spirits) entrance into our lives. The thieves (demon spirits) come only to steal, kill, and destroy and Jesus comes only to give life abundant. And no, that abundant life is not all spiritual and not only for the sweet by and by!
John 10:10 (NIV)
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Do we believe Jesus? Don’t believe the well-meaning preachers and others that tell us we are no longer under the curse. That sure will be a surprise to all the sick, broke, and prematurely dead Christians. This is the verse that is quoted.
Galatians 3:13-14 (KJV)
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
The Law (verse thirteen [depravity and rebellion] singular in number feminine in gender) that Christ has redeemed us from is The Law of Sin and Death. The following Words of God established The Law of Sin and Death.
Genesis 2:17 (KJV)
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Now all the redeemed are free from The Law of Sin and Death.
Romans 8:2 (KJV)
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Meaning, when we sin, we do not die spiritually as did Adam and Eve and thus all men died spiritually and are born spiritually dead. All can plainly see the curse abounds but so does the Blessing of Abraham now available to Jew and Gentile alike that choose Christ Jesus as Lord. How do we avoid sin? Pay attention to our conscience even when we don’t know why, it our conscience tells us it is not right don’t do it. That is the Holy Spirit, our Helper and Teacher. Next, we are to study, not just read, the Word of God to understand and implement. In many places in Scripture this is called having ears to hear.
2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
Prove all that you hear through the filter of Scripture, Scripture alone, prove it in context and in the full counsel of Scripture. In this way you can eliminate the traditions of men, the doctrines of demons, and sacred cows that run rampant in todays Church. To get a little insight into this get my book “Sacred Cows Among the Ekklesia”. Finally, if you are afflicted and don’t know why, pray and God will answer. When the sin is identified repent and renew your mind to the Truth displacing the lie. I will pick up with this more tomorrow, there is hardly any Truth that will serve you better.
TAKE HOME:
- The curse is very much present in the lives of saints and sinners alike but the Blessing, the Grace of God, is ever more abundant.
- We are free from The Law of Sin and Death.
- Are you consistently and diligently studying the Scripture to prove by Scripture all that you believe and live by?
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
