Greetings dear saints of God and welcome to our Study of the Bible Book of James. As I have mentioned many times, I see this as a straightforward (for the most part) Bible Book with Wisdom for today. Much of the Book as to do with the Words of our mouth which springs from the thoughts of our minds as does everything else in our lives, in this creation. There is no way to exaggerate the importance of our thoughts and the words that spring from those thoughts, those beliefs. Now let’s go ahead and jump into our Bible text for today. Remember, I teach the Bible from the Bible.
James 4:5-10 (KJV)
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
We have just come through Scriptures that talk about lust, one having to do with hedonism (life of pleasure seeking) and one having to do with coveting which is wanting to take away what another has for themselves. Now we see that the Holy Spirit “lusteth to envy”. This lust is yet a different Greek word having to do with yearning or longing after. In this case the Holy Spirit longs for our attention, for fellowship with us. The One who lives within, the One who resurrected, made alive, our spirit (saved us) and now lives withing, the One with all Power and all knowledge longs to have fellowship with us. The Holy Spirit becomes jealous when we are giving unnecessary attention to others. Can you imagine being with someone and you have all the answers, but they ask everyone but you?
In the very next verse (six) we are told that the humble receive more Grace which is more favor, a paving of the way before us. On the other hand, the proud, the I can do it myself crowd, are resisted of God. How foolish can we be? I don’t know about you, but I want nothing to do with God resisting me. We must humble ourselves before God and others understanding there is a whole lot we don’t know and we are not superior to other people. This would leave us on our own and we are not enough to stand in this world against the evil forces without God. Don’t lose sight of the fact that this letter is written to the Church as we go into verse seven. Verse seven is another part of the solution.
James 4:7 (KJV)
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
We must ask ourselves if we are completely submitted to God or just here and there where it suits us. Are we consistent in resisting the devil or are we here again just resisting the things we don’t still enjoy that he brings to us. It is important to be fully submitted to God and fully resist the devil. The more we study (not just read) the Word of God the better we will become in submitting and resisting. Submitting has to do with seeing, hearing and doing, resisting has to do with seeing, hearing, and not doing.
TAKE HOME:
- Did you know that the Holy Spirit, the One within, the One with all knowledge and all Power yearns, longs to have your attention.
- Have you eliminated pride in your life and received the help of Grace?
- When we are truly submitted to God and are actually resisting the Devil we receive the help of Grace and the Devil will flee (in terror) from us.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
