BORN BLIND
Wednesday – May 8, 2019, Iyar 3, 5779
Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ and welcome back to this illuminating Bible Study of the Book of John. I recently returned to Maine from a Texas vacation with my soon to be bride (featured on Friday) to meet family and friends. It was the most outstanding trip I can remember. Today’s picture is of the Alamo which we visited as well as watching the film ‘Alamo’ at the Imax Theater in River Center Mall. Now, let’s turn our attention to our Bible Study by first reading our primary text aloud.
John 9:17-22 (KJV)
17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
19 And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?
20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
As one reads and reflects on this passage, if it shows us nothing else it shows us the absolute control the Church was exerting over the people and the fear of the Church. This alone tells you that this Church was more representative of the kingdom of Satan than the Kingdom of God. This is in spite of the fact that the text for both the Ministry of Jesus and the Jews is the same. One text was subverted, perverted, corrupted yet sounded good but was death, and the other was pure bringing fulness of life. This blind man was almost certainly well known by the local folks for they were beggars and I understand were required to wear distinctive clothing. He was likely seen daily by the residents; however, the Pharisees are looking for subterfuge or to induce suspicion bringing the Ministry of Jesus into question.
The rulers, Pharisees, have now brought the parents of this man in for questioning. How did they know who his parents were if they were unsure of his identity? They want the parents to positively identify him as their son which they do and that he was indeed born blind. As a side issue I want to point out that we all are born spiritually blind, we are all born with a dead spirit man. A quickening (making alive to God) of the spirit man requires a conscious decision for God, for Jesus as Lord and Savior. A conscious decision requires the capacity or understanding of the need for salvation (Jesus as Lord and Savior). This is why a child without the capacity or understanding to choose Jesus as Lord goes not to Hell but Heaven. It would be unjust for God to allow a person without capacity or the competence to choose to go to Hell. The wonderful thing is that these persons whether they be aborted babies or children who have not attained the age of understanding go to Heaven. This age of understanding is age 12 which corresponds to when the Jews Bar (males) or Bat (females) Mitzvah their children as ready to serve God or be about the Fathers business. Consider the following verses which are at the time that Jesus is twelve years of age and stays behind talking with the spiritual leaders and the parents come back to find Him.
Luke 2:42 (KJV)
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
Luke 2:49 (KJV)
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?
As we move forward in our text (verse 21) we find that the parents are not willing to answer for the boy and point out that he is of age and can answer for himself. Unlike our current societies this means the boy was at least twelve or greater. In verse twenty-two we see explicitly that the parents feared the Jews for if they confessed, said, that he was healed by the Christ they would be thrown out of the Synagogue. This most likely would mean they would be ostracized and even lose the ability to earn a living. The ways of the curse, of the evil one and the evil ones is on full display. Lord willing, I will move forward with our text tomorrow.
