HIS DISCIPLE
Thursday – May 9, 2019, Iyar 4, 5779
Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ and welcome back to this illuminating Bible Study of the Book of John. I recently returned to Maine from a Texas vacation with my soon to be bride (featured on Friday) to visit with family and friends. It was the most outstanding trip I can remember. Today’s picture is of the Tower of the Americas which is some 579 feet tall with a restaurant at the top which rotates 360 degrees each hour. Wonderful view of San Antonio and beyond. Now, let’s turn our attention to our Bible Study by first reading our primary text aloud.
John 9:24-27 (KJV)
24 Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes?
27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? Will ye also be his disciples?
It seems that now that the man’s identity is not in question and the Pharisees have decided to take another tact with the situation. Some are not denying that a man who was blind is now seeing but they want no praise to go to Jesus but to God. Unknowingly they are directing the praise in the right direction because we know that the Father (by the Holy Spirit) does the works. Just as when we lay hands on someone and they recover the praise does not belong to us but to God. That is not to say that people might not be thankful to us but it should always be clear that it is the Father, it is God who does the work and to whom all glory belongs. Sometimes there is what some might consider confusing terminology for example when Jesus says something like I will come and heal a person.
Matthew 8:7 (KJV)
7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
Should a person in the Church say that today there would be an enormous outcry and they would correctly declare that we cannot heal anyone. And I might correctly point that that neither could Jesus. Put away the staves and pitchforks.
John 14:10 (KJV)
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
Healing occurs, as with other supernatural events, when the match of faith ignites the oil (the Holy Spirit). All is done by faith, in love, led of the Holy Spirit whether it be Jesus in His earthly ministry or you and I in our earthly ministry. It is important to recognize that Jesus unlike any other person alive at the time was born a man, like Adam, and continued as a sinless man (not God). Being of Heaven and of earth He had authority to activate supernatural forces and the Blessing to bring about supernatural results like the healing of this blind man. Once we are born again and not harboring sin, we also have this very same capacity and because of Calvary can do the greater things as well (John 14:12).
As we move along in our text the Pharisees want the man (any Jewish male 12 or greater) to rehearse the story of his healing which he does in part and then is a bit of a smart mouth in verse twenty-seven. I don’t know if he spoke in ignorance or purposely to aggravate the Pharisees but he surely aggravates them. Asking them if they want to be a disciple Jesus would guarantee a vitriolic response. Let’s take a look at the response before we end for today.
John 9:27-29 (KJV)
27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.
29 We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.
We can easily discern that this man will no longer have any place in the Synagogue. They hate him and ask if he is a disciple of Jesus and they make it clear they are not but instead a disciple of Moses. They know that God spoke to Moses but don’t know about this man, Jesus. Due to their hardness of heart and stiffness of neck they do not recognize that this is the Word that come unto Moses saying all the Words of the Pentateuch (five books of Moses). Jesus has already told them where He is from and where we are from, the Kingdom of God.
John 6:38 (KJV)
38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.
Have we also since salvation come down from Heaven?

24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
