THE BLOOD COVENANT BEGINS

Greetings dear brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome to this ongoing study of “Father Abraham”. This will by no means be a definitive study of Abraham. For those new to this Ministry know that I teach the Bible from the Bible. That is not to say that extra-Biblical sources cannot be useful and informative. However, we must never forget that these sources outside of Scripture are not Scripture. We will be reviewing Abraham’s life for it is encouraging for us all to see how God can and does flow in and through imperfect people to accomplish His will.
Abrahams life was pivotal to the redemption account and the restitution of all things. I started this series of teachings showing the glorious end result then we went to the beginning to see the sausage be made. Now, let’s continue examining Abram then Abraham’s journey with the Lord to the fulfillment of the most important promise ever, the birth of a promised child to the birth of the Promised Child. The following passage is very lengthy, but I will intersperse insights as we go through it.
Genesis 15:7-18 (KJV)
7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.
Insight: Here we see the continuation of the Covenant God is making with Abram, with his natural seed, and his spiritual seed.
The Lord is setting apart a portion of the earth’s surface for this first chosen people, the Jews. This is their land forever. Let me point out a caveat, however. They will only occupy what they have faith to occupy in submission to God. In the Millennial Reign of Christ, they will occupy the entire land deeded in this passage.
8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?
Abram asks the Lord how he can know that he and his seed will inhabit this land. So, the Lord initiates a Blood Covenant. The spilled blood of these animals is surrogate for God. At this point God has no blood. However, on the Cross Jesus will shed blood for both God and man establishing Blood Covenant with all who believe forever.
9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.
10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
Insight: The fowls represented demon spirits attempting to interfere with this relationship and the establishment of Blood Covenant.
12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
The Lord gives Abram a timeline and a look into the future. One might wonder if that prophetic Word was transmitted to the next generations. I say that because had Joseph and Jacob know this would Jacob have wanted to go to Egypt and would Joseph have invited them. I would be interested in other thoughts on this.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
Insight: God is merciful to all giving time for repentance.
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
Insight: What about the smoking furnace and the burning lamp? Or should I say who are the smoking furnace and the burning lamp? The smoking furnace represents the Holy Spirit, and the burning lamp represents Jesus. There are many instances of the Holy Spirit being represented as smoke or cloud. For the burning furnace look at Revelation 21:23.

23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
The phrase “the Lamb is the light” means portable lamp not a generalized light which is seen in the prior phrase “for the glory of God did lighten it”.
18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
Insight: Did you notice this Divine land deed is from the Euphrates River in Iraq and goes to the Nile River of Egypt and of course the Mediterranean Sea. When protesters chant for the expulsion, the genocide of Jews saying “from the river to the sea” they are quoting Scripture, the Divine Deed, because Israel does not occupy that land today.
Here we have seen God take the first step in establishing Blood Covenant with Abram and subsequently with all who believe on the Seed who is Christ.
TAKE HOME:
- The Jews have an eternal Divine Land Deed.
- God is merciful to all.
- In our study we see surrogate blood being shed for God, shortly we will see a token of blood being shed for man, but it culminates for both at Calvary.
