THE BLOOD OF THE EVERLASTING COVENANT
Tuesday – August 21, 2018, Elul 10, 5778
Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful faith building Bible Study from the Book of Hebrews. Our God is overflowing in abundant goodness, that is just who He is, Goodness. The featured picture today was taken on a recent trip to Boothbay Maine. So beautiful! Right behind me is an ice cream shop that is beautiful in its own way but does not make me more beautiful. Now, let’s focus on our study for today by first reading our primary text aloud.
Hebrews 13:20-22 (KJV)
20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,
21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
22 And I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written a letter unto you in few words.
Although we are near the end of the wonderful Book of Hebrews, we find the closing prayer, the valediction, so rich with Truth. We have talked about how our Heavenly Father, the God of peace, has brought us wholeness, nothing missing, and nothing broken. He raised Jesus from the dead and among other things made Him our great Shepherd. And, now we see once again that at the core of it all is the Blood of the Everlasting Covenant, the Blood of Christ Jesus. In the course of this study of Hebrews we have spent much time discussing the eternal Blood, ratifying our eternal Covenant in Christ Jesus. There are many songs written and many sermons preached about the shed Blood of Jesus, the Cross, and His Resurrection all of which is our hope most certain.
There is a trail of blood from the Garden of Eden to the Mercy Seat of Heaven. And, that Blood cries out, testifies, and seals our salvation when we chose Jesus as Lord. God made a perfect creation and gave it to mankind, first to Adam and all who would follow. As we are all too aware man sinned in the garden when tempted of the Serpent to turn aside to another god, namely the Serpent. Adam was a sinless man created in the god class. He was not God but he was god of this earth, all of creation. Sin is a corruption of, a repudiation of, the Word of God. Only a sinless man in the god class, in this case only God Himself could pay the price of sin. When Adam and Eve sinned all of subsequent mankind were corrupted, thus sin came upon all of mankind. When Adam and Eve sinned their spirit man died first and immediately. The breath of life (Holy Spirit) departed and due to the corruption of the mind and death of the spirit natural death was inevitable. We see the exact same pattern with Jesus on the Cross when He was made sin for us. I don’t want to get down to far into the details however I believe Holy Spirit wants us to understand how sin came upon all men (people).
Romans 5:12 (KJV)
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
We are all aware that the physical man is combination of the DNA from the father and mother. There is a DNA contribution from the father and from the mother creating another unique physical body. So, let’s ask ourselves about the immaterial or spirit part of the person. There are three predominate theories as I understand it. One is that there is a repository of souls in some nebulous place (perhaps Heaven) and upon conception one of these souls enters the just conceived physical body. I do not believe this view has any validity. A second theory which I suspect many if not most of the Church believes is that the soul (immaterial part) is created and placed there by God at the point of conception or perhaps some later date for those who approve abortion. I do not believe this theory either and I do not believe that Scripture supports this point of view. If you will just think about the making of Eve one can readily see how God works when something already exists He supernaturally multiples what already exists. Her body came from Adam and so did her immaterial part (spirit and soul). There is no record that God breathed into Eve. Eve was the product of Adam’s wholeness (spirit, soul, and body). For further study look at my series on Health, Healing, and Miracles parts twenty-one and twenty-two. The third theory which I believe is the correct one and gives clarity to the Romans Scripture is that not only is the body created in the union of the man and the woman but so is the new spirit man. Can I hear the spiritual devils screeching and tearing out their hair? So, when Adam sinned their spirit died and when they procreated the progeny were born with dead spirits. A Savior was desperately needed to restore eternal life for the immaterial part and immortality for the physical part. God foreseeing the possibility of this need had made provision before He put this creation and mankind in place. I will continue this discussion of the Blood of the Everlasting Covenant tomorrow.
