THE SPIRIT DESCENDED FROM HEAVEN
Thursday – October 4, 2018, Tishrei 25, 5779
Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful Bible Study from the Book of John. God is so good to us, giving us His Word, to guide us into all that is good. In His Word is the abundance of all things for this life and the one to come.
2 Peter 1:2-4 (KJV)
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Does that sound like we are called to a life of poverty and sickness in Christ Jesus? Run from anyone that tells you these fables of walking in fear not love, confusion not knowledge with faith, and lack in place of abundance. We have a good Father, He provided silver and gold and none feeble when they came out of Egypt do you suppose the Blood of Jesus provides us with less? Now let’s get back to the Book of John and our text.
John 1:32-36 (KJV)
32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.
33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
John (author) records that John the Baptist bare record of the Spirit of God descending from Heaven and abiding or staying with Jesus. I do not believe this represents Jesus being baptized in Holy Spirit but I do believe it is when He received the Anointing for the Ministry ahead which included the Cross and Hell. It seems to me Jesus was filled with Holy Spirit at entering the womb of Mary just like the first Adam. Consider the following verses.
Acts 10:38 (KJV)
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
Hebrews 9:14 (KJV)
14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
John the Baptist had been told of the Father that the One upon whom he would see the Spirit descent upon and remain upon was the One who would baptize with Holy Spirit, the fire of God. Let’s look at this from a different gospel writer.
Luke 3:21-23 (KJV)
21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
Don’t you find it interesting that here in the River Jordan, Jesus has not even started His ministry yet the Father says He is well pleased with Jesus. What pleases God? Faith pleases God.
Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Jesus had been exercising faith from his youth and pleasing the Father. This is how Mary at the wedding feast in Cana could confidently say, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” and we witness the water to wine miracle.
John 2:5 (KJV)
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
I wonder if this wouldn’t be absolutely wonderful advice for each of us today. That is, “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it”. We have the Bible, how much of it are we paying attention to and actually doing? As we look back at our primary text we find that not only does John the Baptist declare that Jesus is “the Son of God” but that also He is “the Lamb of God”. However, we see in other accounts that at some point John the Baptist doubts, becomes offended with Jesus, and is subsequently beheaded. I do not believe for a moment that the beheading of John was the will or plan of God but was a consequence of sin (doubt, fear, offence). Tomorrow when we pick up our study we will be transitioning away from a man named John to a man named Jesus.

Numbers 6:24-26 (AMP)
24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
