A MAN NAMED JOHN AND A MAN NAMED JESUS
Friday – October 5, 2018, Tishrei 26, 5779

Greeting once again and welcome back to this faith building Bible Study from the Book of John. As we end the week here is another picture from the ranch of the buffalo. I believe Eve is the one in plain view and Adam is that dark image on the right hiding in the woods. We have been talking at length about John the Baptist and now we have witnessed the advent of the Christ on the scene. This is where we will pickup our study today. So, let us read our primary text aloud.
John 1:35-39 (KJV)
35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;
36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?
39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
Again, we find John the Baptist standing with his disciples and as Jesus passes by exclaims “Behold the Lamb of God!” He lost two disciples right on the spot. These disciples recognized Jesus as a Rabbi, a Master, according to our text. Jesus turns to them and asks them what they want. Their response is that they want to know where He lives. So, He says “Come and see.” This was Jesus’ personal house and thus we can conclude that they were in Capernaum. It is not clear that both of these become a part of the twelve however one did, Andrew, perhaps the other was Judas Iscariot.
Mark 2:1 (KJV)
1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.
Notice that “the house”, is not just a house or a specified house of another person but “the house” indicating Jesus’ house and it is located in Capernaum. This is common in our vernacular today to say “I’m going to the house.” People would commonly understand that to mean you were going home, to your own house. Let’s pick up our text and continue with our study and find Jesus in the process of collecting the twelve who would be with Him during the earthly ministry.
John 1:40-43 (KJV)
40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
42 And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
43 The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
It would seem from our text that the disciples (later Apostles) understood right from the beginning that Jesus was the Messiah. Although they understood that on some level it was not revelation and they had little to no concept as to what that meant in the days ahead. That seems incomprehensible in spite of John the Baptist referring repeatedly to Jesus as the Lamb of God and the Messiah. They were looking for Him to kick out the Romans and setup an earthly kingdom. In spite of their great knowledge of Passover and Day of Atonement both with the imagery, reality, of lambs and other innocent animals being sacrificed for the sins of Israel they did not understand this had to happen to the Lamb of God. We see Peter joining this band of disciples and Jesus refers to him as a stone, however, we know that until after the crucifixion he is anything but a stone. Jesus spoke, prophesied, this into Peter’s life and He became a stone. All of these disciples selected by the Father and Shepherded by Jesus were severely tested at the Crucifixion and over the following three days however they came through the storm and became pillars of the early Church. We must remember that when we are in the storm and are tempted to faint we must look and lean intently upon the foundation, the Word of God. Look to Jesus, the Word, and not the circumstances. The circumstances are subject to change, they are changed by the Word of God. Next week I will continue down through the selection of the original twelve disciples and then into the exciting ministry of the Christ, the Lamb of God.
Until our next publication, as a Bible Teacher and Prophetic Voice I speak this blessing over each and every one of you, receive it by faith in Jesus name!
