COLUMBUS DAY – PART TWO

Greetings dear and precious saints of God and greetings to you that are not saints of God, you are still precious. Welcome back to The Three Minute Word. Today in place of our study of Isaiah I will be talking about this transition in our nation from celebrating Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. I suppose many of you like me, remember singing the song about Columbus sailing the ocean blue in 1492. We were told he was the first to discover the Americas therefore this special day. So why the change?

As I mentioned yesterday this is a bit like Israel having an Amorite Day for, they and others were the indigenous peoples of that land until the Israelites led by Joshua entered the land about 1400 BC. However, the land was deeded to the Israelites (Abram/Abraham) around 2000 BC. They were not a nation in the time of Abram but were a mighty nation in the time of Joshua. Yesterday we discussed the sins of the Amorites and others that brought the judgment allowing the Israelites to take the land. If you are a little fuzzy on that, go back to read the lengthy passage Leviticus 18:20-30, read the whole chapter. We are very close to where the Amorites were dear children, the place where the land is about to vomit us out, and the only thing the Church can think to do is wring their hands and pray for God to do something.

So, what is the beef? Columbus has come to be viewed as a colonizer as opposed to a discoverer. What are God’s children among the heathen? Many believe that land was taken forcefully from the “indigenous peoples” and that may be so but it is my understanding that much of the land was occupied by purchase. The idea of owning land for ones own exclusive use was foreign to the Indians. This led to fighting. Land ownership for one’s exclusive use is a God idea by the way. Just as Gods’ people were the instrument by which the land spewed out the indigenous people of Canaan so were Gods’ people the instrument that spewed out the Indians of North America.

Today many including those in the Church have nearly deified (worshiped) the American Indian. Neither were they gods nor did they worship our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Lord Jesus Christ. The American Indian was polytheistic worshiping many gods. This is common among Americans today including many who declare that Jesus is their Lord. A recent computer search revealed two and a half pages of gods worshiped by the American Indians.

In Europe during this time Christianity was coming under increasing persecution and many were looking for a place where they could worship freely. These Christians came to this land and dedicated it to the Lord and placed their trust in Him. Thus we, America, became the second Covenant nation upon the earth after Israel. This new land looked to be ideal and it was ideal for a season. It is less hospitable by the day and NO it’s not COVID. It’s really not even the government. It is the evil the Church has allowed to flourish in the land. About the same time the Jews were coming under more intense persecution in Europe, so this new land, America, became a safe haven for them as well.

God warned the Israelites not to make covenants with people living illegally on land God had given to the Israelites. America violated that commandment. The Lord said not to serve their gods (pleural) for they would become a snare. Let’s read.

Exodus 23:31-33 (KJV)

31 And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.

32 Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.

33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee.

God also forbid marriages with the heathen inhabitants of the land.

Deuteronomy 7:2-5 (KJV)

2 And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.

4 For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.

5 But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

So, what do we have today? Many of the casinos across America are owned by Indian tribes, lands are set aside as sovereign nations for the various tribes, and America has become polytheistic.

I hope that this somewhat brief teaching has brought not only clarity about Columbus Day but about the parallels between Israel and this nation. In both cases a righteous people displaced an unrighteous people. We know the Amorites and others were given at least 400 years to repent and serve God but they did not. We don’t know how long the American Indian was given to repent and serve the One and only God but we do know that God, our God, is just.

Lord willing, I will pick up with our study of Isaiah Thursday, tomorrow is The Feast of Tabernacles. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
