WHAT ABOUT TONGUES? – PART SEVEN
Video link: https://youtu.be/NVK66949ss0
Greetings dear ones and welcome back to week seven of our Sunday teachings on tongues. To say that this topic is controversial is an understatement. Some say it is of the devil, and others say that it passed away with the first century A.D. On the other hand, in certain circles tongues is properly used and is a blessing to all. Still in other circles it is abused, out of order, bringing confusion and ridicule. Let’s listen to the Lords’ instruction through the Apostle Paul.
1 Corinthians 14:2-6 (KJV)
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
Concerning verse four consider what Jude who was from the same household as Jesus has to say. To be edified is to be built up. Even though our mind does not understand what the Spirit is saying through us, our spirit man does and is built up. How does faith come? By hearing the Rhema of God.
Jude 1:20 (KJV)
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
This applies mainly to our private prayer closet but when there is an interpreter present in the setting then it is edifying to the whole Church. The Apostle goes on in verse six to tell us what we learned in Isaiah 28, which is that God brings us knowledge primarily by our native language. Tongues in a public setting without an interpreter brings only confusion. I suggest that my readers read the entire 14th chapter of 1st Corinthians slowly and repeatedly.
TAKE HOME:
- Our personal prayer language (tongues) is of God.
- Our prayer language builds up our faith.
- Our personal prayer language is primarily for our private prayer closet and the gift of tongues in the presence of an interpreter is for the congregation.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
