Greetings dear children, sons and daughters of the Heavenly Father and welcome back to this illuminating study of the Bible Book of Haggai. We are so fortunate to have the Policy and Procedure Manual for life now and for eternity. This Policy and Procedure Manual is of course the Holy Bible. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text reading out loud.
Haggai 2:1-4 (KJV)
1 In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying,
2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,
3 Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:
This second chapter of the Bible Book of Haggai opens giving us another date less than a month from when work started in earnest on the Lords House. Again, the Lord is speaking through His Prophet Haggai to the Governor of Judah Zerubbabel and Joshua the High Priest and the people that had returned from Persia under the decree of King Cyrus some 18 years earlier. The Lord asks who among them saw His House in its first glory. The Temple was destroyed along with Jerusalem about 586 B.C. and it is now 520 B.C., sixty-six years later so it is possible a significant number of them had seen the first Temple, Solomons Temple. If you research the expense of the First Temple it would have certainly been something to behold. The Lord asks these leaders and the people how the current state of the Temple compares with the former Temple. Of course, the Lord already knew the answer. They and He saw that there was no comparison. Although they had been working on it for a little less than a month the quality of work was apparently not excellent. Perhaps the effort being exerted was not what it could or should be. Again, in verse four above the Lord of hosts assures them that He is with them and they must be strong. He tells them to be strong and work. Let’s move forward into the fifth verse before concluding for today.
Haggai 2:5 (KJV)
5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
Know that nearly all of God’s promises whether they be positive or negative are conditional. In general, they are a consequence of our choices, our actions. The Lord had covenanted with His people upon coming out of Egypt for the Promised Land, a land flowing with milk and honey, all sorts of over-the-top good things. However, they did not do their part and therefore had again and again entered into bondages. Their part, our part, is to always put Him first doing all His Word. He assures them that His Spirit remains among them. Now, here’s the thing, the Holy Spirit is everywhere present but not everywhere manifest. The manifestation of the Holy Spirit or not, is totally dependent upon us. People sing songs for the Holy Spirit to come and to move but He is already there and waiting for obedient, willing vessels.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here with our study of Haggai next Saturday. The Lord is good, He is not the source of our problems, and He cannot lie!
