Greetings dear saints of God and welcome back to this exciting study of “The Trail of Blood”. We are following from before the foundation of the world, the Garden of Eden, Noah, Abraham, and now Moses. An exciting journey to full and eternal redemption and return to the original intent of God.
Let us now turn to chapter sixteen of Leviticus to study about the annual Day of Atonement, observed to this day by Jews around the world.
Leviticus 16:29 (ESV)
29 “And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you.
This was an annual observance by the command of God; and is still observed by Jews worldwide, but without the blood sacrifice, since there is no Temple. The Day of Atonement is in the seventh month, and the tenth day, which speaks of responsibility. God’s responsibility to offer redemption and our responsibility to accept or not. The number ten speaks of responsibility; and as noted earlier, the number seven indicates spiritual completion. Five animals (five is the number of grace) are involved in the Day of Atonement; a young bullock for blood sacrifice, and one ram for a burnt offering for the sins of the high priest. Then Aaron was to take two young goats for the sin (blood sacrifice) offering and one ram for a burnt offering for the people. First, we will deal with the blood sacrifice and burnt offering for the High Priest and his house.
Leviticus 16:1-6 (ESV)
1 The LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD and died,
2 and the LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat that is on the ark, so that he may not die. For I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.
3 But in this way Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with a bull from the herd for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
4 He shall put on the holy linen coat and shall have the linen undergarment on his body, and he shall tie the linen sash around his waist, and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water and then put them on.
5 And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
6 “Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself and shall make atonement for himself and for his house.
In this portion of Scripture, God is telling Aaron that he cannot come just anytime into the Holy of Holies, or the Most Holy Place any old way. This remains true by the way. The reason is that God Himself, in the form of the Holy Spirit, is present there; and Aaron would die if he did not come, exactly as instructed, at the proper time. There is a way to approach God just as there is a way to approach various people in our culture. Scripture tells us to acknowledge Him as our Father in Heaven and to come boldly not arrogantly but confidently. Aaron’s sons come with wildfire.
Leviticus 10:1-2 (ESV)
1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them.
2 And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.
Back to Leviticus sixteen. First, the High Priest must be clean (from sin), so the offerings start with the High Priest.
Leviticus 16:11-14 (ESV)
11 “Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house. He shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself.
12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the LORD, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and he shall bring it inside the veil
13 and put the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is over the testimony, so that he does not die.
14 And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the mercy seat on the east side, and in front of the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
TAKE HOME:
- The Day of Atonement is an annual observance on the Hebrew Calendar and we; the Church should commemorate this day as well for it looked forward to the eternal sacrifice.
- There are ways to come before the Lord if you want to honor Him and in return be honored. We have mercy and grace, so we are not consumed with fire as we dishonor the Lord.
- Have you received the Blood to be cleansed, for your sins to be remitted never to be remember anymore (by God).
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
